York Brewery Yorkshire Terrier / Stonewall

Most interested in these kits next time round. Can anyone who's tried them let me have your thoughts on the end product, and can you let me have your OG and FG figures if you have them? Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

The first kit I ever did was the Yorkshire Terrier Bitter.

I enjoyed making it more than others I've done since, because it comes with hop pellets and that somehow made it more like real brewing (great smell too).

The end product was very nice - will certainly do another but I haven't seen them for sale very much (Hamstead Homebrew sold me mine with my starter kit).

Go for it !

Edit - didn't measure gravity (oops).
Edit - if you visit York you can visit the brewery for a few quid - interesting talk from the owner.

I can get my kit from Hamstead Homebrew. Always interested in the impressions of those who may have done any kits I'm interested in, and I also like the idea of now getting kits with extra grain / hop bags. However, I'm also interested in the OG figures. Most of you will be at least aware of the threads / posts that have been going around concerning kit manufactures ABV claims. Now, York claim an ABV of 4.2 for their kits. From the 'Hints & Tips' link above 1kg of extract will give you 300 gravity points, divided by the brew length; so, a 40 pint (23 Ltr) 3kg kit will give you 300 x 3 / 23 = 39 gravity points. So, assuming an FG of 1010 (usually optomistic for an all malt kit) that means an ABV calculation of 1039 - 1010 x 0.129 = 3.7% ABV; not bad, but not 4.2%. A more plausible FG of 1014 would give an ABV of 3.2%! Any thoughts and / or comments are, as usual, most welcome! :D

Actually, it may be worth noting that I always use S-04 now, and I've always got to the suggested FG when I've done so (1014 for my latest kit, have stopped at 1012), which includes my last two Muntons / Woodfordes efforts!

Are these kits produced by Muntons as well?

As far as I'm aware, no. I believe that they are produced by York Brewery in conjunction with Hamstead Homebrew. I don't believe that Muntons are involved, but I wouldn't swear to it!

Hi There, first post and done a number of kits thus far but a little confused by the instructions on the Yorkshire kits.

In the final stage it says to add "light" spray malt once fermentation is done. What I did last time was hold back the required amount from the original spray malt that was in the kit and used that, however, I wasn't too impressed with the end result.

It says "light" spray malt which it doesn't say on the malt in the kit, that is just "spray malt", could anyone tell me if I have to buy extra "light" spray malt for this kit, which seems kind of strange to me for a kit or do as I did last time and just hold the required 80grams back from the original packet.

Thanks,

Alex

First beer - Woodforde's Wheery - very nice (best one yet annoyingly!)
Second - Woodforde's Nelsons Revenge - not too bad
Third - Muntons Golden - not too bad but turned out very malty
Fourth - Yorkshire Terrier - not too bad but was expecting more
Five - Yorkshire Stonewall when I get the answer to the above.

I've a Terrier conditioning at present and quite frankly I ignored the bit about adding spraymalt when kegging and just added my normal 85 grams of sugar since adding spraymalt at this stage, in my opinion, would have no noticeable effect on the final brew.

Thanks for that tip, I shall try the same then. Which sugar do you recommend?

Thanks,

The bog standard granulated sugar that my wife buys from Asda which is either Tate & Lyle or Silver Spoon. I don't get hung up about the type of sugar because, as I pointed out, whatever you use this small amount of sugar isn't going to affect the final taste of your beer. I only moan if she's run out of sugar when I'm ready to keg.

That's interesting because there is a Birmingham reference on the packaging and that's where Hamstead Homebrew are based so your theory adds up.

The style of the kit is lot different anything that Munton's produce.

The York Brewery kits are produced by Muntons, told to me from Andy at York Brewery.

I tried the stonewall, brewed with honey for secondary fermentation which a colleague did and it was fantastic. I have his instructions and purchased the kit from H&G and plan to brew it next.
