How much should gravity drop after 4 days?

Post by Scotty » Wed Jan 07, 2009 9:17 pm

I've got a Milestone IPA kit on the go which I started on Sunday. The SG was 1.042 and as it stands today (Wednesday) it is down to 1.020. The temperature is between 20 to 25c.

Is a drop of 0.022 a decent drop in gravity after 4 days?

The instructions state it takes 4-6 days to ferment and I would like to know if I should expect a drop of 0.010 in 2 days?

Cheers
Scotty

Funnily enough my ball park target figure for 4 days is 1020. I tend to up the SG though to around 1045-1050 as I prefer a slightly stronger brew. The Coopers Wheat I bottled yesterday dropped to 1020 after 4 days but it did start at 1052 and I added an extra half pack of yeast to cope.
I shouldnt worry, especially as you started it Sunday and its only been 3 days.

Doubtless. My Wherry is, as we speak, languishing at 1020 after 7 days. Why o why didn't i listen? ](*,)

Scotty, it doesn't matter if it takes 7-10 days (in my experience) as long as it gets there.

Sorry about bringing the Woodforde's thing up again... just letting everyone who's been lulled into a false sense of security by a lack of recent bad reports that it can stil happen to you!
Right I'm off to trawl through those several thousand posts on "Muntons / Stuck Fermantation" and see what I can do to save it. :-({|=

Not being able to rely on the fermentability of the canned wort of kits could be justification to take matters into your own hands....just planting the seed

(that's what spurred me and probably some others anyhoo) AG is not hard, it just takes time, but that can be split over a couple of days/nights to fit in. Kit's-wise I found the Brupaks ones reliable, though want to say I was disappointed with the Wherry stick issue - very.

The gravity is still at 1.020. I have a packet of Geordie lager yeast to hand. Can I use this to re-pitch?
