Coopers Dark Ale

Post by Bryggmester » Tue Jan 13, 2009 6:08 pm

I have been suffering from the Lurgi which has swept the country and really couldn't summon up the energy for an AG. The brew I did for Christmas and New Year was running dangerously low so I decided to resort to a kit of Coopers Dark which I had lying around. I made it up with 500 g spray malt and 500 g demerara sugar. I also steeped in boiled water 2 oz amber malt, 2oz chocolate malt and 1/2 oz of Saaz hops in a hop bag for about half an hour. Into the brew went a safale S04 yeast. Fermentation went like clockwork and after 10 days I ran it off to the keg. It was clearing well at the top and I can tell it is going to be a good brew, both taste and aroma toffee and chocolate  . Did one like this three years ago and asked my brother to do a blind tasting with this and an AG dark ale I had made. He said they were both very good but on balance he chose the one which was the Coopers    I really must get round to trying the Stout!

Had one sitting in the shed waiting to be brewed since mid December, a present from my online supliers (brewmart)
Must get round to putting it on, but have to admit I am in a Wine making mood the last couple of weeks

ROTFLMFAO! Toffee and Chocolate sounds Good! But, as for the taste test?! Sorry; What can I say? It's a Coopers Thing! 8)

Actually, once I've finished killing all the rats in Co. Leitrim ~ which it rather feels like I'm being called upon to do right now! ~ I really Must get a cheque book ordered and get another order in with Shane. I have it locked on his site. Just need a way of paying the man.

The order includes a sample kit of Coopers Dark Old Ale. If that hits the mark - as I'm sure it will! - maybe a couple of dozen of those will have to find their way into my Brew Store

:D :D :D Do you do UK visits?

Hehehe.....I live in an old ramshackle house in the middle of fields and stuff, and there's metric shedfulls of mice and rats round here. The dog likes a good rat fight and I wage ongoing chemical warfare on the mice that are constantly challenging my sovereign rights over the garage.

Today, the Mrs. opened up the cupboardunderthesink (I bet the Germans have a word for that) and found a dead rat. A nice fresh one, mind.....none of your half mummified rubbish. Funnily enough, the reason she opened it was to replace the mouse bait at the back. Looks like we need bigger bait trays.

What's your recommendation for the best rodent genocide product anyway? Asides from paraquat and cyanide and other stuff my government won't let me own.

Adm; If ye serious about tackling ye rodent problems ~ and ye should be, because their presence in and around ye property is a Deadly serious matter ~ I'll be willing to discuss it with ye, by e mail.

This isn't the place for it. Nor is the Tap Room. I don't wish to incite, nor listen to, Amateur Hour. But I'm happy to have a private chat and shall point ye in the best directions for ye situation.

If my addy (Sat Here) is available through this site? Hit me. Title it Rats. If not? PM me and I'll give ye my e mail.

I've got a Coopers Dark Ale in the cupboard, awaiting the fermenter. Unfortunately, due to various maladies over Xmas, I still have around 25 gallons of beer on stock... so I won't be brewing beer for a while.

Now rats... don't get me started on rats... bane of my life.

If ye have problems, Paul? PM me. I'll double up on what I'll be saying to Adm. Obviously, every situation's unique. But I'm happy to give generalised advice and can almost certainly help ye to help yeself, one way or another.

Rodents can do a Lot more harm than just the latest 'Bug'.

Haven't got any rat problems (few years ago did live in a house near Tottenham for a week and that house had rats in it smelt like a gents as well - moved out in under 7 days), but I did start up a Coopers Dark Ale this afternoon. Smells pretty good, not too unlike the stout looking forward to drinking it in a month or so time.

Cheers Ditch, I might just do that. They're not a major problem at the moment, but I could do with a bit of info.

quick update on my Dark ale. 5 days fermenting and just checked the garvity and its down to 1004 - bit shocked it has gone so low (reading the hydrometer after a couple of drinks so might have misread it). It really erupted after 24 hours and was sick all over its side and left a nice pile of foam on the floor - luckily I had put a towel under it when I started. Going to keg it tomorrow then get on with my next brew a Coopers IPA. Will let you all know what its like in a few weeks when I start drinking it
