Hi I made up my Brewferm Abbey kit last night - so far I have one problem and one good thing.
Good thing - check out the yeast head after 12 hrs
Bad thing - made up 2 gallon kit with 500g light spray malt - OG reading came out at 1.055 (23c temp) whereas packet says it should be 1.070[/img]

That's a great yeast head!
But what's happened on the OG front ? What did the kit instructions say for sugar additions - presumably you replaced 500g sugar with 500g spray malt instead ?
Dan!

Cheers
That yeast head is actually quite scary - I had a dream it came out the bin and ate me last night
The instructions said 500g sugar but then said if you use candy sugar add 5% - should I have added 5% also how much of a difference would the 3c make to the hydrometer reading.
I still suffer from chronic inpatience and couldn't be bothered to wait until the temperature dropped to 20.

That yeast head is VERY impressive!
3C would make a negligible difference. Can you type out the instructions regarding sugar as they're written?
All I can think of at the moment is that you didn't stir it enough before taking a reading (this can make a large difference to the readion), or that you made larger than the intended volume of the kit.

9ltr kit with 500g's sugar is correct
My set of instructions doesn't have a SG on it just a FG

I've been petitioning H&G to start carrying it. Be a cheap belgian beer yeast alternative

Wow great site there.
Shinny, shinny, shinny, things!
25kg of LME, I think my postie would object to deliver that
Lots of stuff for the beer dreams, and a lottery win.

The instructions DaaB has posted are the exact ones I used - the amounts I've used are the same as those in the instructions - the OG is written on the label.
I'm sure it'll turn out ok - 6-8 weeks maturing is a bit steep though - I managed to hold out for 3 weeks with my nut brown but that was hard

Nut browns are pretty quick to mature, strong Belgians won't reach their best for a couple of months at least.

Hey Mysterio
I just noticed you're from Glasgow, doesn't seem to be many scottish folk on the forum

There's a handful of us but we're definately under represented!
Could be partly due to the fact that our homebrew supply shops are pretty awful.

there's a couple of shops in Edinburgh I use which seem to be good , but then I'm a beginner so I suppose they may not have everything for more experienced brewers.

I suspect you're right. I've been using Safbrew T-58 for Belgians and have been happy enough.
