A few questions from a newbie...

Post by neilos » Sun Nov 08, 2009 5:50 pm

Got a couple of things I need to get straight in my head before a go ahead with my first brew!!

I'll try and keep the questions short and to the point:

Brew enhancer: Is this a direct replacement for sugar? If so Can it be split 50:50 with sugar? Can it be used for bottle conditioning?

Bottle conditioning: I plan to transfer my brew from FV#1 to FV#2 primed with sugar. How do I calculate the amount of sugar to add/amount of water? How long could it be left in FV#2 with the priming sugar before it has to be bottled? Is there any advantage in leaving it, i.e settling?

FV Tap: I plan to tansfer from FV#1 to FV#2 via a pipe from the tap on FV#1, but what diameter pipe should I order? ( I haven't got my FV yet)

FV lid What should I do with the lid on the FV? I have an airlock, but will the initial fermentation be too much for this? Should I un-snap the lid a bit for the first couple of days then clip it down as fermentation slows down and rely on the airlock?

Crown caps Do I need to sanitise these?

Hard water I live in Suffolk, and believe it's a fairly hard water area, am I right in saying that if I just fill up an empty 25l bucket with tap water and crush half a Campden tablet and add to the water and leave for 10 mins, I'll be ok?

Brew Enhancer is indeed a replacement for sugar is a 50/50 mix of spray malt & sugar you can certainly use for bottleing.

Ammount of sugar will depend on what the instructions with your kit say, It is normally around 1/2 tsp per pint/bottle

I just bottle straight from primary so can't give you any options on whether secondary fermentation in an FV would be bette or not.

Depends on your tap what diameter pipe you will need mate.

I always have the lid of my Fv off a bit throughout the brew but that is cos of the lead for my immersion heater going into the FV

Just ask who ever ye get the FV from to send ye one with a tap and a metre of the correct diameter hose to fit on it. (Ye might find dipping the end of the hose into hot water for a minute before shoving it on helps. That, or a smear of Vaseline).

Camden tabs are actually to neutralise the chlorine and chloramine in the tap water. Hard or soft. But, yepprs; Half a crushed tab and ten minutes is more than enough time for it to work
