Woodfordes Wherry home brew

Post by cheshire31 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 3:42 pm

Well i started yesterday. And hydrometer reading was 1.046. Is this normal and is it fermenting properly. It had a fine head when put into measuring cylinder and smelt and looked like beer.

guess you mean the OG (original gravity) was 1.046 this sounds about right for a wherry. Do you have a nice yeast foam on the top of your brew?? I'd leave a few more days then do another gravity check. I normally leave my hydro in the beer as I brew it cos it saves keep serilising it. Let us know how you get on

Give it some time........the more you open up the FV the more chances you have for infection. When you transfer it into the keg you'll be able to have a taste.

took a sneaky peak inside the FV and was greeted by an intense floral/beer smell. and there was brown stuff on the head. is this normal for a wherry?

A brown/ creame foam is normal. After about 5 days from the start check the gravity again. It will be around 1010 t0 1016 for a Wherry. Anything below 1016 is common 1012 is pretty good. When you have a steady ready for at least 48 hours you are ready to bottle of barrel.

Hi chesire31
That all sounds very normal for a wherry. Mine usauly take about a week or so to ferment to about 1014 or maybe a little lower. The key time is around 1020. If it gets past that and continues to drop your doing great. Aim for 1014. Then keg with 85g sugar or demerera. or bottle with half teaspoon sugar per pint. leave it till it clears then get stuck in. Oh yeah, Having a taste when bottling is a must. It does improve with conditioning, But as its your 1st i dought it'll last that long. Cheers Normski

A quick update: The airlock isnt bubbling greatly and its been in around 5 days. On inspection there doesnt appear to be a great amount of activity, does this mean fermentaiton has stopped?. When i tooka reading yesterday it was quite pale. I thought it was more amber coloured.

OG 1.048 FG 1.012. Kegged with 1/2 teaspoon of sugar stuff that they said to use with it for 40 pints. Had quick sip and it tasted really watery. And it was v cloudy. Is this ok? Or

Good gravity readings. The cloudiness is normal, and it will taste a little insipid when completely flat.

A half teaspoon of sugar per pint, or around 80-100g for a 5 gallon keg will do the trick... a few days at 20-25°C to carbonate, then transfer to somewhere a bit cooler to help the beer to clear.

Had another taste .Still tasted flat. I added glucose powder is this right? It probably has been very cold. Should i try and start secondary fermentation again?
