Problem with King Keg Top Tap

Post by JayM72 » Fri Jan 15, 2010 10:30 am

Hi

Kegged a batch of St Peters 2 weeks ago in a King K TT and decided to try a bit last night, first glass was surprisingly good so had a second! This is the first time I've used a KKTT, previously used a standard bottom tap 'budget' keg. My problem is now that the beer is below the level of the tap it's not coming out. Obviously I did attach the float to the tap but I assume it's either come loose or I did something wrong when putting it in. The barrel seems to have a lot of CO2 so should I just open it up (is this OK) and do something with the float? maybe I'll go back to old fashioned bottom tap kegs!

Thanks
Jason

When you say the keg seems to have Co2 what do you mean ? You open the tap and gas comes out ?

Hi Mick

What I meant was that when the beer was coming (originally) coming out of the tap is was very lively. My concern was attempting to take the lid off when there is a lot of pressure in the barrel.

If it's below the level of the tap now and nothing is flowing then just open the tap and it shoudl release the pressure then take the top off, reconnect the tube and reprime and wait another week or so for it to carb up.

Thanks

Will I have lost all carbonation in the beer? Is it not possible just to top up with CO2 from bottle? Assuming that the tube is connected to the tap where should the float actually be?!

You will lose the carbonation unless you then go and reprime it, you could top up with Co2 from a bottle but I am not sure how successful force carbonating is in a king keg. I'd say the natural priming route is the way to go myself.

The idea of the float system is that the float holds the tube just below the level of the liquid but on top of it so you're not sucking mud from the bottom from the very start.
The float should be on top of the liquid obviously.

Do that. I don't need to explain to ye why. Ye've just discovered that

Did you suss out what the problem was, Jason?

Interested to know, since I like many have been using KKTTs for ages without any real worries; from experience the problem is bound to be a very simple one. Certainly not worth 'ditching' your keg over.

thats right what barn says they are great little kegs using mine at the mo for about the sixth time nener any probs .
wich type of float is it? the old type wich is quite flat with a hole in the middle for the tube .or the new type with three holes in and a ball on top to make it float.if your worryed about taking the lid off and spoiling the brew you could tip the barrel forward till it covers the tap to get as much out as pos before you open it. Ive got x2 KKTP and never had any problems. Have you tried adding more CO2 to ensure there is enough pressure inside?

Hi Barm

Well I opened the lid, adjusted the float, put the lid back on and topped up with CO2 and glad to say that since then everything has been working fine :D In fact the St Peters is almost gone (well it would have been all gone by now if I hadn't slowed down the last week!). So much for waiting for it to mature.

Trouble is now I've been caught out and will be without beer for a couple of weeks until my Muntons Smugglers is ready
