Brupaks - beers of the world

Post by Whrrr » Mon Jan 25, 2010 7:25 am

I've bought a couple of Black Country Mild kits. As each kit only produces 10 litres, I thought I'd double it up with two kits so I'll be almost at the normal 3kg kit amount.

Now, the yeast sachet in each kit is the same as the 3kg/23litre/40pint kits so should I use just one or put both sachets in? Is the amount of yeast used per brew or per amount of wort? The single sachet in the 23litre kits seems to work fine so I would guess 2 sachets in 20 litres might be too much...

With thanks,
Mark

I don't think it'd be too much, but the one sachet may just do it on its own.

use both! i doubled up a batch of the beers of the world belgian Xmas beer and used both and it was great. most beer kits dont have enough yeast in them. 11g per 5 gal is closer to the mark and most kit sachets are only 5g ish.

Right - I've finally got around to doing this and I did indeed use both sachets.

The thing is, without thinking I pitched the yeast when the wort was around the 33 - 35 degrees mark. Will this be too hot? I should have waited until it was somewhere between 20 - 30 degrees apparently.

Do you think it will be ok?

I think you'll get away with it.

Have you got a LHBS you can get a spare packet of yeast from? Chuck another packet in if nothing is happening after a couple of days.

Good idea - I'll see what happens over the next day or two.

Thanks!

Hooray! At this point, you should pop up on to the roof and start shouting about how your creation lives, they were all fools for mocking you and now you are a god, and so on and so forth... :)

Now there's a thought... Thing is, both next door neighbours would know about my beer, and the cat would be out of the bag and much less beer for me!

Well, it's still bubbling away, seven days later. Normally (with previous Woodforde's/Munton's) kits it's only bubbled away for about 3-4 days and I've left it in the vessel for 10 days. Considering it's still going, would it be best to leave it for, say, two weeks?

check it again in a couple of days time - then leave it 2 days and check again - if the two gravity readings are the same then its ready I'd say..
