Beer Kits, any good?
Beer Kits, any good?
Having done a few extract and all grain beers, I really dont have the equipment or money at the mo to improve my equipment so thought of doing a beer kit. Question is, what are the beer kits like, do they taste good? and if so, any recommendations on a good one?

No. If ye like stout? I'd appear biased as all hell in whole heartedly recommending Coopers. But, I like it. I've also done their " Dark Ale ", is it? Dark or Old. One of the two. That was nice too, as a change to my staple diet.
I'm also always happy to give, I believe it's " Brew ..... " one or the other; Packs or Firm? One lot seems to specialise in the Belgian sort of stuff. Other seems to produce some excellent kits. Anyway, the non Belgian one (Belgian type beers not being to my personal taste) I'd be happy to suggest, on the strength of what I've seen said of them. Never tried them myself. But, never seen a bad word written of them.
Bottom line is; Kits are now light years away from the crap we used to get, back in the 70's. Replacing Tate & Lyle with spray malt is probably a lot to do with it too. But, don't listen to me, or anyone else ~ exclusively. Browse this board. Home in by using the Search function, for what catches ye eye. See what ye wind up fancying and give it a go.
There's not much wrong with most kits, these days. Like it says; Decent beer; Quickly and cheaply. No great fuss. Suits us

Re: Beer Kits, any good?
Hi,
I'm pretty new to this so i try a differant kit every time i brew and ive done roughly a dozen or so. In a nutshell they are all good, but for me the coopers stand out just that little bit above the rest. That said there are lots of other well regarded (on this forum) kits that i have yet to try, and will do in time and i'll most likely give one of the Brew**** kits a try next that Ditch mentioned in the last post. Just try one, i doubt that you'll be dissapointed.
Cheers D.

Re: Beer Kits, any good?
I've only ever made one kit, having been a bit of an anti-kit man before (read that as stupid snob!), it was Brupaks, Pride of Yorkshire, Colne Valley Bitter. It was so easy to make and the quality really impressed me; clean, clear, crips and reasonable bitter and, with the included hop bag added in the secondary, nice hop aroma and taste. Although I will mostly brew all grain (I enjoy the process) I would certainly not dismiss kits anymore.
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

I'm currently dirnking the occasional Fixby Gold (Still not cleared) and it already tastes fantastic! Wherry is also a very good pint.
