odd tasting Youngs bitter

Post by Heavy Drinker » Fri Feb 09, 2007 11:52 pm

I was bought a cheap youngs bitter kit for christmas and made up about 4-5 days later. I left it in the primary for 10 days and bottled. As I was not exactly thrilled about this present and the store cupboard was bare I only used granulated sugar in it. It has now been bottled a good 4 weeks but has a very odd aftertaste to it. Has anyone made up this kit before and if so do you know what I am talking about? As it stands this brew is going down the sink.

very, very first kit. didn't know the difference then but now i think i know after a couple of really successful brews.
aftertaste horrid. the missus who works in a pub said if she served that then there would be up roar and moneyback asked for in the pub.
i only left mine for about six day then barrelled it, so if it was bottled, cannot really comment but wasn't impressed. had "proper" real ale and 5hite like worthingtons in my life but the youngs was just "not there", if you know what i mean. i did just use a kilo of normal/household sugar and 2oz or so of normal sugar for priming but just wasn't there, as a beer/drink.
as a matter of course done young's lager and exactly the same thing, evne though i used about 400g of brewing sugar(all i had left over) and the rest normal sugar and exactly the same thing.

its not a medicinal aftertaste, cant put my finger on it really but certainly not pleasant. Pour out a pint and it looks the biz and keeps a decent head, however the most important quality, the taste is a real let down.
The odd taste has not died down after 4 odd weeks in the bottle so is it likely to do you think?

i'm drinking a youngs bitter now and although it's no woodfordes wherry it's pretty decent for a one can kit. I used 500g of dark spray malt 500g of glucose a brupaks ale kit enhancer and glucose to prime. 2 and a half weeks in bottles
