Rusty old John Bull Masterclass -Malt Extract - Bitter

Post by lukeykookey » Fri Feb 05, 2010 11:30 am

So I pick up a load of old brewing kit from fleabay and lo and behold I am offered a rusty old tin with a watersoaked old label - its been the the basement for some time..

Closer inspection reveals the label "John Bull Masterclass -Malt Extract - Bitter" and no further instructions.

It sat under my sink for the best part of 2 months while I ummed and ahhed about using it....last night I had some spare time so

Whipped the label off to reveal a crumbling tin, gave the important bits a good sand off to get rid of the rust, and heated the tin up in some boiling water...

Sterilised the equipment :^o

Did a lot of digging on the t'interweb for instructions with no joy, most other John Bull kits specify 1kg of sugar but uploading instructions for this bad boy seemed to have evaded even the keenest of computer oriented beer brewers. I did find a little gem of information saying that its 'very drinkable' =P~ from someone who appeared to criticise life in general, so sounds good! =D>

So I settled on using 1kg for this experiment...tipped 1kg of white cane sugar in, dissolved, added the malt taking care not to get any rust in there [-X , added the water, added some beer yeast...

It is just starting to do something.

I am looking forward to the result, the fact I may have to wait about 20 days for something that might taste like absolute sheeee hight is a bit of a strange concept. And I'm not even a bitter drinker

The masterclass kits were kits that didn't need any extra sugars as they came with a full 3 kg of malt extract so I'd expect you'd get a reasonably strong beer with the extra kilo. Might be worth dry hopping it as i've read that the hop flavour is something that can fade a bit in really old kits and with the extra kilo of sugar the hops could fade even further by comparison.

Well its took about 2 days to get going! :o

But theres now a 1cm deep fine scum on top of the liquid, one bubble through the airlock every minute or so - this may take some time lol =P~
