sugar

Post by rhodian » Sat Feb 10, 2007 4:39 pm

i'm a novice - one great brew of cooper's lager so far! but my local homebrew supply shop is all out of brewers sugar, and won't get more in for two weeks. now, i can't wait - not even for an internet delivery! but i've heard not to use granulated sugar (?)

i mean will it TOTALLY ruin my tom caxton real ale, or just make it a wee bit less good?

or should i partially invert the granulated sugar by boiling with a squirt of lemon juice? worth the effort?

many thanks

Go back to your local brew shop and buy some dried malt extract. Use this boiled in water to replace the sugar. This will greatly improve the kit.
Alternatively go to your local chemist and buy glucose, this is in effect brewing sugar :)

they were out of dried malt extract too - my plan had been to use half that, half sugar. oh well...

thank's for the idea of asking chemist for glucose - i'll do that.

cheers

In fact I'd go as far as to say use spray malt instead of sugar every time
