Pressure barrel gassing
Re: Pressure barrel gassing
I think I'm having a very similar problem too. It's a wherry and it's cleared well after 2 weeks so I've cracked it open but it loses its pressure after 4 pints or so and some air bubbles went in. I have an s30 canister, and i've been trying to increase the pressure in by using that, but i'm not sure if its working (i've read that you only need a couple of squirts per keg, I've had a do 3 already and i've drunk less than half). When I use it, a lot of gas seems to flow out of the canister and around the keg but not into it, as if the valve might be wrong: heres a picture http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5 ... AA280_.jpg
So is it normal for some gas to flow out the sides? What should I do about the air bubbles that i've had before? It tastes fine at the moment so I'm a bit confused!
Thanks very much!

Re: Pressure barrel gassing
Is it my eyes, or is there a raised, hollow 'tube' sticking up in the middle there? Should just be a hole in the bottom of the brass.
Could just be a trick of the photo? But, I can see my own keg tops clearly enough and that just doesn't look like what I'm seeing on them

Here ye go. It should like this:

Re: Pressure barrel gassing
mm yeah mine's definately got a little hollow tube in the middle. It did seem like some CO2 was going in, just not properly I guess. Any ideas as to what I should do?

Matt; What ye've got there sounds like one for use with the little tiny bulbs. Ye mean't to screw one of the little plastic holders on top and they discharge all at once.
Ye need to get onto a HBS (local or on line) and get an S30 brass and bottle. That's an S30 brass I'm showing ye above.

Hi!
I have seen talk'round these parts of something called a "Widget world adapter" which fits on top of the cap you have and coverts it to take an S30 canister correctly. Not sure if a financially better choice or if a proper S30 cap would be cheaper.
viewtopic.php?f=6&p=197455 seems to discuss this, for example.
Regards,Nick.

Widget World!
I'd clean forgotten all about that stuff, Nick! I've frankly never heard they did such an adapter. But, I understand they do a dialled pressure gauge? Let's ye actually see how much gas ye using? For that alone, I'd love one! Imagine being able to control ye beers pressures like a pub landlord? No more guess work and ye could learn the exact pressure that makes the pint exactly how ye like it. Brilliant!
I guess it's all added cost, especially for a beginner, or lower level consumer. But, it's got to be tempting

Ahhh..... anything with extra dials or gagues gets me every time!
I remember getting my first car with a rev counter and nearly crashing several times due to watching it rather than the road!
What you describe does sound a little OTT but I am slightly jelous of those who post in the Brewdays forum with lovelly digital thermometers with probes and that, when I have an old-fashioned spirit thermometer.
(I suppose the fact that I'm not mashing grains might make a difference, I appreciate why some feel the need for accuracy there!)
Nick.

Re: Pressure barrel gassing

I've since worked out that a blob of silicone, either side of a tiny hole in one of my FV's though ..... How cool would That be?

No, those WW dially, gaugy things though? Who gives a damn what they Actually do? It's just having them!

Re: Pressure barrel gassing
I've heard that you can pull that pit out with some pliers.

Hey Ditch - sounds like a slightly nerdy but fun evening!
My greatest jelous streak is split between two parts of the University where I work. Heres the dilemma - am I most in need of one of the techicians in microbiology to make me lovely yeast starters or of the entire chemistry staff to disappear for a couple of hours so I can 'borrow' the pharmacueical grade still for some 'research'!
Now those boys have some kit, there are literally whole labs of stuff where I do not recognise 90% of the equipment, let alone understand it. (And they don't let me into the brain tumour lab - although curiously by looking through the windows it is possible to see a large fishtank containing several of those bubble-eyed goldfish. I have my suspicions about them!)
regards,
Nick.
P.s. first batch of Ditch's stout going on in a couple of weeks, I'll join you in a virtual one when it's ready! N

Not nerdy, mate; Gadgets!

And, the Chemistry boys, all the way! Who knows what other interesting bits of kit they might have there? LED read outs
