Light and Kegs

Post by SaltaireStout » Thu Feb 11, 2010 6:25 pm

I've currently got a couple of budget kegs sat in the house, they're not in direct sunlight but are in a room with windows, so I'm wondering; how good are budget kegs at keeping harmful light off me beer?

It's Yorkshire and the middle of February so I don't suppose excessive sunlight is going to cause me any problems at the moment  but I do wonder if anyone has had any problems with sunlight degrading kegged beer or if you protect it in some way?

Cheers

I only have my kegs in daylight for secondary then I move them into a big cabinet I have in the kitchen, mind you there is only room for 3 kegs in my cabinet so I usually have one keg sat in the front room until 1 in the cupboard is empty, no more than 4 weeks usually and I have never had any problems.

Are we talking the now ubiquitous white kegs? They're what I have. And my 'in use' ones are always sat on the sill of a south facing window. Never had a problem.

I suppose we should remember that these things are opaque, after all. I don't suppose 'Sun Strike' can penetrate them.

I usually cover my barrels/bottles with old blankets, to keep heat in and light out during carbonation, then they go into the dark place(its the cellar really) to mature. As you say, winter light up north is a relative term. Having only started brewing fairly recently, six months or so ago, I understand your anxiety, i was belt and braces with chin strap on me flat cap to start off with, but you get into a groove and learn from each brew, patience in my case. If you are there Ditch I have just cracked open a bottle of your recipe that has been conditioned for ten weeks, bloody marvellous.

Cheers, it was, it is superb. As an Englishman of Irish and Geordie extraction I like the heavy beer. my brother always liked his stout, but £3+ a pint stopped him, Gave him a Coopers kit for xmas (he makes wine, for the missus, so he says), he is gobsmacked with the result, salutations to vesuvius and the krausen brain.
