FV in heated water bath, how do I test (new brewer).

Post by Shayne79 » Sat Feb 13, 2010 11:04 am

Hi all,

I'm still ordering all I need to start home brewing Cooper lager, and I've had some guidance from two collegues who are already making it, so I've kind of got the jist of it, except;
I'm brewing in a cold outdoor shed so need heating.
I've read through loads of topics here, and will be using a temp control waterdrum (with aquarium heater) with the FV inside the drum.

I do have one question though; As I understand it, I need to sample the brew and test the SG after a few days, and do so every day until it become stable.

How can I sample the brew from the FV, if the tap is under water?

Many thanks.

Thanks Chris,

I understand what your suggesting, I'm hoping to use the "FV in a bucket" method, that way I can use a thermostat and not have to worry about temps (lazy I know).

But,

to test the brew after a few days, surely I need to run some brew out from the tap on the FV, that way I don't have to put the hydrometer in the FV keeping it all clean still. So how can I test the brews SG if the tap on the FV is under water, would I have to lift the FV out each day to run out enough of a sample to test the SG (I've got a 250ml measuring cylinder I was planning to use).

Many thanks.

"Leave the hydrometer in the Fermenter".

That's definately the answer, I couldn't see the wood for the trees.

Cheers for that, just one more question:

When I'm ready to run it out into bottles; (lifting the Fermenter out of the bucket), as long as I'm careful it won't cause any problems will it, or disturb any residues?

Many thanks again.
