Opening beerkit tins - getting in the darn things

Post by wobbly_bob » Sun Feb 14, 2010 2:43 pm

I am new to home brewing and on my second wherry fermentation. I am finding the most difficult part of the process is getting into the damn tins -- I have already gone through 4 tin openers and had to hack off the last tin with a penknife. Maybe its just the crumby wilko's
tin openers I am using - but does anyone else have this problem??

Get a decent tin opener.....all of the tins that you get for homebrew are the same so you'll need something better.

:| Don't know if it's relevant but; I use one of those oes that cuts round the outside face of the tin. Shears the top clean off. That's as opposed to the old fashioned type which, effectively, cut a hole in the top of the tin, if ye see what I mean?

So, mine has a horizontal wheel. Not a vertical one. No problems what so ever.

Nothing fancy either. Pretty much just grabbed what ever I saw in Woolies ~ so That gives ye some indication of how long I've had the thing too!

I used a cheapo Morrisons tin opener.........just a regular opener (but not old and blunt) No problem. Opens beans and cat food too!!

I use one of those too, never had a problem. The culnicare magican is awesome, costs about a fiver but well worth it.

I have one that you put on the top, push a button on the top and off it goes on its own. shears the top clean off.

hi all,

nope i wasn't joking!! the reason for opening the tin upside down is because the top has a deeper lip enabling the manufacturer to insert the instructions and a packet of yeast beneath the plastic cap. this deeper lip is why some tin openers do not work very well.

if you have had problems of this kind...try opening it upside down next time!! :D :D

Please note that you should pay attention to the initial orientation of the can before you turn it upside down. If you ignore this advice you run a very real risk of turning the can upside up and that could be disasterous.

And they say kit brewing is simpler than all grain!

I checked the old tins and it looks like there is a thicker lip at one end -- so I was opening them wrong way up -- dooohhhh -- they should print on the tins "THIS IS THE TOP OF THE TIN" for donuts like me.
