Advice from shop differs to that on my first brewkit

My first time brewing following receipt of a great birthday present. 40 pint Woodforde's Wherry beer kit.
Had some great advice from this site already, but the bloke in the shop, Brewers Droop, Bristol, said that with this beer kit I would not need any brewing sugar, despite what it says on the packet. (i.e. Transfer the beer into bottles or a pressure barrel with a little sugar - half teaspoon per pint - to help condition the beer.)
Has he stiffed me?

Yesterday I transferred from fermenter to pressure barrel, no sugar added. (Committed deadly sin of sucking on siphon tube, though.) It didn't taste bad but it didn't taste great, is everything ok as it stands? :?

Now, i've been out of the game for a while, but from what my drink addled brain can dredge up, it's entirely possible to bottle or keg without priming sugar, but it will take a long time. I wouldn't like to speculate as to how long, but i should think it's possible.

How did it taste?

Sort of vaguely fairy liquid-esque?

I think he was referring to the fact that it's an all-malt kit in that you don't need to add a sackful of sugar before you ferment it like you do with the cheap one can kits. The sugar added to prime the beer is separate. If you had a pressure barrel with a CO2 fitting then you could use a S30 cyclinder to add CO2 - you then wouldn't use any sugar at all.

You don't need to add primining sugars, but the beer will take longer to carbonate and come into condition; in other words, fret not. :wink:

The beer isn't going to taste great out of the fermenter either - it's worth leaving it a month to mature and condition anyway; the two weeks mentioned on the packaging is a tad optimistic.

Good point steve - he probably did mean that; however, I still think you should be ok leaving it to carbonate on residual sugars - although of course some might disagree...

Thanks I can rest easy and wait for the results.
In the meantime I shall have to pop down the pub. This could be hell, sheer hell.
