Too long without co2?

Post by PEACOCKSUIT » Tue Feb 23, 2010 12:28 pm

My Wherry kit stopped fermenting in the FV after about 2 weeks. Got down to about 1014/16.

Due to unforeseen circumstances (me and my gf have split up) I have not been able to see this brew through properly. After 3 weeks it was still sat in the FV. I had the corny keg, regulator, tap and everything ready to go. 1 problem, no gas. I have a place lined up where I can get the bottle filled up for £20. I just haven't had the time or cash to sort it out. Im hoping all will not be lost though, and If I get the gas on Friday (pay day and 1st day off in over a week!!) and gas up the corny keg, it may be salvagable [-o< .

The best I could do in the situation was to clean/sanitise the corny keg and rack from the FV into this. I though this was better than having it sat on top of a layer of dead yeast and stuff in the 1st FV......

I put the lid on but like I say its been sat there now in the corny for over a week, BUT - with no co2. I am worried that it will be badly oxidised. I know ppl rack to a second FV as part of the process, but afaik they put a protective layer of co2 back on top of the beer in the second FV, which of course I have not been able to.

Hi,

I don't use and never used cornies so I don't know how they work but could you not have added sugar to the corny for secondary fermentation? then when you get gas syphon it out and back in when fined??

Hi mate. I suppose I should have used sugar and done a secondary fermentation. Its just a big steel container in essence so there would have been no reason why not.

The fact is though that I didn't :( . Wish I had though.

After being in there as it is, not fermenting just sat there in the corny with no pressure and no co2, is it likely to be dead? Is there anything that I could try to save it?

I might as well hook up the gas when I get it just to see what it's like. Unless anyone can confirm that it would be totally pointless.....

Hi,

Forced carbonation can happen anytime, i'm quite sure that it will be fine . Give it a taste and if its tastes good and doesn't make you ill (bare in mind it will be flat) then gas it up and drink away!

It won't have oxidised to the point of being sh*t? That was my concern.....Its not had that protective layer.

I'd suck it & see too. Even if it doesn't taste too good at first, give it time - at least until you put your next brew on. Sorry you've had some bad luck - whether that be the (ex)girlfriend, the beer or both.

No reason the beer should be oxidised when it's in a sealed container. Gas it up soon and you'll be fine, it's really no different to transferrring to a secondary fermenter, what you've done.

I had a few (flat) glasses last night.

It's actually real nice  !

Ok, It's homebrew and it tastes like homebrew, but considering I didn't really give it much care or attention - and that I didn't alter the kit in anyway to improve it....Its bloody good! Maybe next time Il ass some fresh hops or whatever.
Got the gas today too. Paid £20, a tenner for the bottle and a tenner to have it filled. I have only just got home though so will gas it up tomorrow. Just need some plumbers tape now......there always seems to be something else to get

Brewing my next one on Friday  . A stout I think. Black pearl or possibly Coopers Irish. Iv heard good things about both.

Well and truly addicted to this hobby now!

Cheers everyone
