SAAZ Hops

Post by PEACOCKSUIT » Fri Jun 04, 2010 11:21 am

I bought a big bag of these hops on a bit of a whim. I have a john bull lager kit which has been in the Fv for about 2 weeks.
I would like to have an experiment with adding some of the SAAZ to develop the hop aroma and flavours. i was originaly thinking about making a tea and adding it with all the ingredients at the start. I didnt do this though so what could I do with them at this stage?

Cheers.

You can go ahead and make your tea and add it during fermentation, in theory more of the aroma will be retained this way.

Thanks to everyone who reported this chaps posts, I have made admin aware of them.

Ah no, only coddin'... ;)

Can anyone post up a link where I can get teabags? I haven't seen them in my local homebrew place and I'd like to give them a go.

This is one option which has a hop tea bag and a grain tea bag in it. They do a nice job of jazzing up a kit, only problem is that you can't tell what hops are in them, but they definitely improve a kit brew.

It was banter, that's all he even qualified it below that saying he was only codding.

Clearly. But banter or not something must have been being referred to. I didn't think it was a serious comment I just wanted to know what was being alluded to. I'm not even clear which 'chap' it was directed towards.....

edited.....just to add to that I'm not really bothered I just saw the comment looking back over old posts and wondered what it meant, thats all. It's a pretty bizarre thing to just say off the cuff without any context  .

Anyway........ :)

I put up a link to a business that was removed.

Then someone did the same. Before that post could be removed I jocularly (though it appears not to have been taken that way) stated that I'd "called the cops".

Post was then removed, I'm guessing, which is why there is nothing now to refer it to.

Hope everyone's happy with that explanation.

I have a bag of Saaz hops that I am going to use soon to help make a Hoegaarden clone. I also have some East Kent Goldings to use as well in the recipe. The recipe is on this site and I sort of followed it before, but not quite. The result is lovely, but nothing like Hoegaarden. In fact, I'm drinking pint of it as I type this.

This is what I did:
1 can of John Bull larger
1 can of Edme Light Malt Extract
EKG+Saaz hops
Corriander seed and mandarin orange peel

I followed the directions as stated in the recipe but because I used a can of LME I ended up with a beer like drink instead of a larger like drink. I'm not complaining, the end result is wonderful, full of aroma, with a well balanced hoppy bitterness that makes it soooo lovely on the pallet.

The next one I'm doing will be based on two tins of Morgan's Queenslander Larger that my local shop in Southend on Sea was selling off cheaply. I figure that this time I will achieve a more realistic clone.

Has anyone tried the Morgan's stuff before? I'm conscious that I'm not brewing it as it should be and going straight to a recipe with it! So, I have no idea how it tastes under "normal" conditions.

Ta,

Dave.
Currently Drinking: Marris Otter with home roasted porridge oats, shredded wheat, crystal and black malt, EKG hops and Nottingham yeast. Smooth, dark, and rich - put some aside for Xmas.
Currently Drinking: Bohemian Pilsner with porridge oats, shredded wheat and basmati rice, along with Saaz hops, mandarin zest, coriander, cardamon pods and Munich yeast. Silky on the mouth with a wonderful summer taste. Love this brew!

My thought process has always been that before I start modifying something, I need to know what changes will be beneficial. The only realistic way of making that decision is to brew a kit in it's standard form and then making an informed judgement.

Experience is not to be discounted but without knowing what the original product tastes like, the additions or omissions are pure guesswork.

If your a gambling man then ignore this advice :D
