Post by Stomach » Mon Aug 23, 2010 3:08 pm

Hi All

as I am still in my very big learning curve, a fairly simple question, whats the advantages with a King Keg over the economy kegs?

Anyone else any thoughts or preferences? Is it worth paying an extra 20 quid to get a king keg rather than an economy keg?

Ta!

Yes, as a KK comes with a gas injector valve, budgets dont.
Better tap, you can easily dismantle the KK tap and clean it. KK Tap also doesnt rely on threads molded into the barrel to be affixed. You can change the tap and fit a better or more elaborate one, you can with a budget barrel.
KK is designed to handle higher PSI, budgets susceptible to splitting on poorly welded seams if the safe working PSI is exceeded.

With kegs, you tend to get what you pay for. Better quality, more robust, longer-lasting, get your arm in and fix things.
Having said, that I don't own a budget keg. So, I suppose I'm saying, buy a KK if you can afford to.

I have both, and to be honest, I prefer the budget kegs. That said, once you have added the S30 valve and if you want a float system, they end up the same price as a king keg. The only disadvantage is the smaller neck opening on the budget barrels. But I use budget rather than KK in any case. The tap on the king keg is crap and the budget ones are a lot better.

Some mixed views there then!

A simple questio about King Kegs - how does the top tap work? My simple vision of physics would suggest soemthing needs to happen to get the beer out of a top tap once the liquid falls below the tap level.

I assume there is something else inside to help this?

Cheers.

There is a flexible tube from the back of the tap to a float which keeps the tube mouth just below the level of the beer, the keg must be under pressure and cannot be gravity fed and it draws beer from the top of the level of the liquid when you open the tap. You can convert the bottom taps to being just the same by adding the floating ball systems which you can buy seperately if you look around the web.

I am a big fan of the KK (and no, I don't work for them lol!!) - I've had 2 for a fair few years now, and other than having having to replace the odd seal here and there (cost buttons from the LHBS), had no issues with them whatsoever
