Demijohn vs bottles
Demijohn vs bottles
To cut down on the amount of space bottles take up doing an average kit,am I okay to transfer it to demijohns instead?
If so,how much sugar per demijohn would I need to add?

Re: Demijohn vs bottles
When do you mean you want to transfer it to a DemiJohn.
Is it for fermenting, which would be fine, or is it after fermentation has finished to store it, which would not be fine.
When you bottle beer with sugar the pressure bulds up which carbonates the beer, if you did this in a DemiJohn it would burst as they are not designed to withstand pressure.
You would be better of to transfer to a Plastic Keg.

Or you could use fizzy pop bottles, like 2L Coke ones. They will take the pressure but you need to store them in the dark.
Re: Demijohn vs bottles
Whatever you do, don't put sugar in a demijohn and add beer. It'll blow...
You could consider using the 5 litre water bottles (about a quid each from the supermarket). They'll take more pressure, but it depends on how you are going to dispense your beer as to whether it's a good idea.

I'm looking for cheaper-than-barrel option myself, I have bottles all over the place in the garage. I might try these bag in a box things, although I'm still reading up on their suitability for ale kits.

I think you will find traditional style polypins to be sturdier and longer lasting than the type that linky shows. I have never used this type myself but have bought cider in them and they always seemed a bit flimsy. Also I'm not sure about getting the tap on and off. Has anyone else used these who can give more information on their suitability?
Re: Demijohn vs bottles
I have had a few of these Bag in Boxes from a local microbrewery and dispense via a beer engine, last one about to go! I use a 'Vitop' connector which fits over the tap and can be easily released sealing the line with no spillage, good for cleaning the line.mickhew wrote:I'm looking for cheaper-than-barrel option myself, I have bottles all over the place in the garage. Presently I am doing a few kits and trialling the sturdier polypins for fermentation, then using the Bag in Box for secondary/dispense, using a 3/8 hose tap to tap, no air.
If you just want the bag and not the box they are much cheaper from www.baginboxonline.co.uk, they are supposedly once only!
When I packed in AG some many moons back, I had so many bottles everywhere brewing became to much of a chore with all the cleaning racking etc. I was never a fan of the barrel route as I prefer real ale and CO2 was a no no.

2 litre fizzy drink bottle are a good option to save space.........only about 11 for a brew............just means you will have to drink about 4 pints in a couple of days once opened (do you see a problem with that

dude, plastic barrels would be best, ebay is your friend, i just picked up 4 plastic barrels 2 fermenters, 6 youngs brew kits and 1.5kg of youngs sanitiser and some bits n bobs all for £40..... look for local pick up only listings, but failing that asda do smart price 2L sparking water for 15p, great for the bottles
