Brewferm Diabolo Slightly Low OG - Okay?

Post by danza » Wed Mar 16, 2011 11:20 pm

Hey all,

Just started 2 Diabolo kits off, and used 1.2kg of golden syrup. I've just measured the OG at 1.069, whereas I believe it should be 1.075. Will this be okay, or should I add a bit more golden syrup?

Cheers!

Should be fine. I started out on these kits. Not bad, but I found you have to give it a good thrashing to get the FG down below 1020 if you use the yeast that comes with the can.

Okay, thanks for the info. I'll be keeping an eye on it just incase it does need that thrashing. :D

Hi Danza,

On my fourth Brewferm kit and all have finished at much less than 1.020 with no thrashing. Sticking fermentation is more a Munton's thing, from what I've read here.

One thing you might want to check when you take the OG reading is the temperature of the mix. If you've just added the hot work and the hot water which you disolved the sugar in, the liquid could still be pretty hot (if so, let it cool a bit before pitching the yeast). When I did my Old Felmish Brown kit, which was only 9 litres, the water was still at 30c even after adding the rest of the water. The hydrometre is normally calibrated at 20c, so if you got, for example, 1.069@30c, that would give a corrected OG of 1.073. If it was at 20c when you took the reading, don't worry about it - it'll still be a strong drink, but maybe 7.5% instead of 8%!

Thanks for your reply. I did account for the temperature, and from the measurements I took, it should still be pretty high ABV when finished (~7.7-8.0%).

Glad to read you've not had any trouble with your kits, hopefully mine will be the same.
