Woodforde's Wherry...no flavors?!!?

Post by deLaCuerva » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:17 am

hi guys, i write because after 3 month i tasted my woodforde's Wherry and...what a mess!
it has a bunch of anonymous flavors, nothing really defined, they are mixed in a confused way..it's like if the tastes are present but hidden...don't know where...
maybe it's just my falt (i added 250 gr of light dry extract to add a little body and maybe the beer isn't balanced anymore)..i hope the time will make the tastes grow because i read some great review about this kit

I'm also dreading trying mine lol

It stuck at 1.012 (which I ended up bottling it at) and I've got to wait until friday to see if it tastes any good

I'm not holding out much hope for it, but, you never know, I might be pleasantly surprised

I hope you get a taste for yours and it's not ended up being a waste :-)

The annoying thing is that I've got a tub of yeast nutrient that I was going to put in (well, a teaspoon lol), but the woman in th HBS said not to bother

Wish I had done, now

I've learnt my lesson and I'm doing a Cooper's Stout, next (Ditch's, of course)

Shame that I'm walking away from Muntons/Woodforde's after only one attempt, but I don't have the money to waste on stuck kits lol

Nothing wrong with an FG at 1012. I believe the magic number is to get below 1015?

I had no issue <yet> with Woodfordes or Muntons. Have had a few stick with Tom Caxton though, and I have also learnt not to use yeast nutrient as I dont want to put a load of Chemicals into my brew, after all I am trying to make ale as natural as possible!

What I have learnt though is to be patient and try and do everything else possible to get the FG down, stirring, leaving longer etc etc.

Cheers

Oh no, I hadn't thought about it like that lol

I take it the nutrients aren't that healthy for people, then?

Presumably, there is no health risk! Haha. However, when I was preparing a yeast nutrient mix to go in a brew, I stupidly licked the spoon after a stir and the taste can only be best described as a putrid, vile amonia taste! And I didnt want that going in my brew! I gave the stuck brew a good stir and the stuck, unsticked on its own. I dont use the stuff now.

I just dont want 'unessesary' chemicals going into what is basically a mixture of all naturally grown ingredients!

I have done 2 pretty succesful Wherrys now. One took 8 weeks to clear the other 10 and they both could have done with a bit longer, but new brewer impatients took the better of me!! :D

I have two more to do which will be part of an experiment:-

One with our tap water
One with spring water from my In Laws natural spring to see if there will be a difference. I think there will be!

I have enjoyed very much Wherry and will do loads more I am sure!

Cheers.

I've done 2 Wherry's before, and will be starting another one this afternoon. My previous ones were done with ordinary white sugar and left as long as I could before drinking - I think one of them lasted about 3 months before I couldn't resist it any longer! Only good experiences so far, I thought it was bloody lovely!
