Bottle to polypin

Post by wiredcharlie » Tue Mar 29, 2011 7:59 pm

I've been using a couple of barrels, but in order to get my production further ahead of consumption I bottled a batch. Well, I wish I hadn't! Clear bottle, cloudy pint. I'm trying to formulate a plan to get round this. What I have in mind is to transfer the larger, 2ltr bottles, to an 18 pint polypin.

What I'm afraid of, is that I will oxidise the beer in the process. If I chill the bottles first, so that the CO2 goes into solution and decant it into the polypin, can it absorb oxygen or will the CO2 prevent that?

Much appreciated

Tony

I wouldn't transfer it from the bottle into a polypin, that is very likely to oxidise it.

You just need to pour the beer more gently from the bottles. Pour the whole lot out of the bottle in one gentle pour and you shouldn't disturb the sediment. It does mean you have to drink 2L at a time if you have bottled it in 2 L bottles.

It doesn't actually mean you have to drink 2ltrs at one go. If the yeast is a good one and has compacted you can pour off half and then leave the rest to settle for a day or two. I never had problems with this when I bottled beer.

Bryggmester - If that is the case then shouldn't the beer survive being transferred to the polypin?

No, a 2 ltr botlle when opened will last another day or two, but if you bung the whole lot back into a polypin you are doomed, unless you are likely to drink it in a day or two. As others said, oxidation will set in before you know it. Perhaps I should have made myself clearer in my first post. Apologies.
