Smuggler's Ale OG
Smuggler's Ale OG
Hi Guys,
Does anyone know what the typical OG is for this ale?
This is the second time I've done it but I actually took a reading this time; my OG read 1044.
I did a little research; couldn't find too much, just noted that one or two people stated theirs were higher.
Thanks.

Re: Smuggler's Ale OG
Assuming that your Hydrometer is calibrated correctly at 20C, then maybe your wort wasn't quite thoroughly mixed, or your brewlength was slightly over the total of 23L?
All that said, I am sure that it will still end up as a tasty brew

Re: Smuggler's Ale OG
I got 1046 but I have a feeling I didn't stir the bottom properly, especially as I'd also added a 500g bag of spraymalt.
Re: Smuggler's Ale OG
Well, I'm 2 days in now.
Would it be worth adding the 400g or so of light spraymalt I have in the cupboard, or giving the brew a stir now?

whats the flavours of the smugglers .... and Diabolo for that matter?
Re: Smuggler's Ale OG
I wouldn't do it again - it's actually come out a little too heavy and sweet. Maybe 200g for some body lift but that would be about it.Dogpitt wrote:Well, I'm 2 days in now.

It's a very good kit though. Nice hop up front, then the sweetness of the body comes through then a balanced bitterness. I'd love to see what it's like bottled - doing that I wouldn't add any spraymalt at all, I think it would go against the carbonation.
Seems to taste best when served at around 18 degrees, I've had the fridge switched off and tasting it as the temp rises.
Re: Smuggler's Ale OG
OG 1.044, 1.046, 1.048 are all fine.
Their's too many variables at this stage to expect precise consistant readings.
Kettles don't always stop at the same temp, tap water is extremely inconsistant depending on the time of the day, the time of the year etc. Chances are that the kits also have variable specs before being packed, then their is of course how well mixed everything is. As long as it's not completely out of what your expecting don't worry about it at all.

Hi Geezah, are you talking about Brewferm Diablo?Geezah wrote:whats the flavours of the smugglers .... and Diabolo for that matter?
Brewferm kits are quite hard to pin down to a particular flavour IMO, they aren't a hoppy brew, more herbal, fruity & spicy and very strong to boot!
The Diablo would make a great Winter/Christmas brew because of its spicy flavour and it's ability to warm your cheeks after 1 bottle

The Smugglers is a nice malty brew with a lovely hop finish and not too bitter if I can remember. Quite a nice session beer to be honest and one of my fave brews to date.
I dont know about Diablo, but apprently warms your cheeks up

Cheers

I'd get one going soon, because it needs about 3 months to matureGeezah wrote:I think the Diabolo is gonna be my winter warmer then.

I would also recommend using candi sugar instead of brewing sugar get the best from the kit
