Dogbolter Beer type kit?

Post by Gogs17 » Fri Nov 04, 2011 1:04 pm

Hi

Thinking back to my late teens at College, getting a taste of real ale, I remember a beer in the Firkin pubs called Dogbolter. I had fond hazy memories of getting lashed on this stuff.

I remember it made me fall backwards off a bar stool once [-X naughty beer!!

Does anyone on here know if there is a Dogbolter kit? If not, is there any kit that can have ingredients added to it to give the same taste?

Cheers
Gogs

There is a kit for an Australian resurection of dogbolter but that is a rather different beer. There is also an AG recipe that feels about right, I mismeasured something when I made it but it was pretty good (http://www.lrp-world.org/beer/index.php ... ichc&id=16).

I sort of remember having similar College/Uni experiences to you. We actually put our year head off work for 2 days when we invited him out for a Wednesday afternoon session when it was only £1 a pint.

If memory serves it was about 5-5.5% and a dark, but not black ale/porter? Quite malty and not noticeably hoppy.

Assuming my memories are not clouded I would suggest a possible Coopers Dark Ale as a base, with some added malts (I will leave it to others to say what), 1kg of Dark DME and 500g of sugar/dextrose/dark sugar. Possibly short brewed to around 18l.

Just pure guesswork on my part as I can't really remember exactly how it tasted, but I have just made a 20l Dark Ale kit up to approx 5.3% ABV using a similar set of ingredients without the malt, so I know I am around the ballpark for strength.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a go... Im keen to have a shot at mixing things about with kits, malts etc to get new things brewed. Always keen to experiment.

I know what you mean about the College £1 a pint thing, I used to love it. The College I went to was in Cheshire. There was always a student night at the local nightclub on a Tuesdays - £1 a pint. Coming from Scotland I would always load up on £1 notes when I was home for the holidays, I would then use them in the nightclub on the student nights and get £4 change when I handed it over for my £1 pint! They always thought it was a fiver I handed over.... Result!!

Ahh, Dogbolter. Used to have a blurred picture on the tap. That takes me back. That wasn't the nicest I recall, there were a few others that they did too.
Do the Firkin pubs not exist anymore?

Re the Firkin chain.... Went out of business some time ago (or bought out by another chain type operation).... Tried to find Dogbolter in kit form but I have been told it's not available..... However you can still buy Dogbolter in bottles.... Try a Google search for The Ramsgate Brewery.....

There definately used to be a Firkin Dogbolter kit as I bought and made one up two or three years ago. I got it from 'The Happy Brewer' in Bedford. They don't stock it anymore however, so as stated, probably no longer available.

I remember drinking Dogbolter many years ago in the Flounder and Firkin in London. Great pint.
I saw a kit a few years ago in the Home Brew shop in Leominister, But it is no longer on there web site.
I've had a google and found that The Brew shop appears to have it on there website, But it's now Discontinued. Shame.

Hi,

I spoke the head brewer of The Ramsgate Brewery a couple of months ago at a food and drink fair in Canterbury about Dogbolter. He informed me that he was once a brewer at a Firkin brewpub in London and has bought the recipe/rights to Dogbolter from Bass. The Dogbolter brewed by Gadd's is same stuff as appeared in the Firkin pubs back in the '90s. As far as I know he doesn't do Dogbolter in kit form.

Hi Gogs
I've found an AG recipe that appears to be Gadd's, so should be very close to the original. If needed I will convert it to a 23l brew and post it.
It's a Porter, so maybe you should try to brew some of the better Kit Porters. You may find one that you like.
