Help - the geordie mild question...

Post by abaxas » Wed May 09, 2007 3:25 pm

Just a quickie...

I popped into wilko's today and couldn't resist the geordie mild kit at 4.99 and some of their 'beer enhancer'.

However I'm not sure what to do :) as I have many options.

1) Do the kit with 1kg of glucose and the provided yeast
2) use the 'beer enhancer' and some safale-04
3) other general combos of the above etc, saving the 'beer enhancer' for another day.

Answers on a postcard etc.

No brainer for me, im doing lager kit with the beer enhancer and S04 yeast.

I guess you only get out what you put in. Beer enhancer is a mix of spray malt and glucose and will undoubtedly be better than sugar/glucose alone.

Whats wrong with the yeast supplied with the kit?

jsut to add my two-pennies worth I haven't done a bad Geordie kit yet. OK they are the bottom end of the scale but even with some tate and lyle it came out fine.

Did you do them with the yeast supplied?

I'm drinking a Geordie Bitter as I type (Xmas present).

I made it with 1Kg of medium spraymalt and the yeast supplied - no problems fermenting the 100% malt addition, and it tastes okay... Well most of it has gone, so it can't be that bad!

I've never understood why people worry aboutt he yeast that is supplied with a kit. Every kit I made I used the yeast that came with it and it was absolutely fine.

Now if I had a kit that had been sitting around for a number of years then I would be inclined to use a different yeast, but other than that I'd use as is.

Quick update as I've just finished bottling it...

Made with the 'beer enhancer' and s04. Tasted good out of the fermator so lets hope for good things after a few weeks in the bottle.

Infact it tasted rather like a posh 'fed ordinary'. :)
