Geordie and Tom Caxton kits

Post by Pauliet » Tue Feb 21, 2012 1:50 pm

Just been into the local Moronsons (oops sorry Morrisons) and they have the Geordie Bitter / Yorkshire Bitter kits at £6.99 and Tom Caxton Real Ale at £9.99. I tend to brew all grain now but picked up a couple for the father in law. Got a Tom Caxton for myself as a standby....for less than a tenner is a decent drink, particularly if you dry hop it with a few Cascade cones. Also the Geordie enhancer is under a fiver.

I have used these kits before and with decent results bearing in mind you get what you pay for. With sugar instead of BKE it works out at £8 for 40 pints thats 20p per pint 8) Even with the BKE its only just over 30p a pint.

Interesting... I've just been given a Geordie Yorkshire Bitter kit and am trying to think of something to do with it, I was just going to throw a bag of BKE and use some S-04... and possibly use a hop tea, but dry hopping is sounding like a decent idea as well

I'm aiming towards a quite hoppy aftertaste, not quite IPA territory, but something tasty, I was also thinking I might add some crystal for a biscuit flavour, but then I might just throw it in the FV as intended and use the crystal/goldings on my first AG

Any suggestions on how to spruce up a Yorkshire Bitter kit will be well received :)

I think you pretty much got it covered, maybe apart from tying a big bow round the FV thats about as spruced up as you'll get a kit like that :D I did make one last year with a hop tea but didnt think about that this time #-o I'm off on holiday next Monday for a week so will dry hop it before I go and leave the hops in for the week. Be intereting to hear how yous turns out!

Yeah I figured that was about the limit of it without doing a fruit beer or something... I might see if I can get my hands on some more exotic hops... something like citra might be nice...

I'm going to be brewing at the weekend so I'll update here as I go :)

I've got a pack of citra in my "stores" so may try it with a dry hop mix of Citra and Cascade.
