Cold conditioning temp?

Post by Hedgerow hoarder » Tue May 29, 2012 4:02 pm

I've just done a nelsons revenge , and wanted to know the best temp to condition . I've put 40 bottles in my shed after leaving a wk in doors at about 22 / 26c . Now there in the shed it's only 18c I really think I need it colder but hard in this warm weather. Any help or ideas or am I worrying over nothing!

Cold conditioning forces CO2 into solution so this is why it is advocated. Whether it will ultimately prove to be a problem I don't know as I haven't brewed in warmer temps but there must be many who have so I'm sure someone will be along with a definitive answer. Try shoving a couple in your fridge for a week and then open one of these and one of the "warm" ones to see the difference.

Thats a good idea will leave a wk then pop one in the fridge and leave one in she'd , a side by Side test. But would love to here more opinions.

I've never noticed a real difference. In the summer even my garage never goes below 18 degrees, so I just leave the bottles out there to condition, they seem fine to me.

First kit I conditioned in the garage and the second I left indoors. Both taste great. The one indoors is a stout and has only been left for a couple weeks and I know stouts are meant to take a long while to come good so it can't be that bad keeping them inside.

Should be ok - i've found the higher the temp, the longer they take to carbonate properly. You could always bring in a good supply and leave them in the fridge for a week before drinking

SWMBO might not be impressed tho

Never had any problems myself. They're out in the shed and in the hot weather it can get into the mid twenties in there. No ill-effects that I've seen so far anyway...

Nelson's. Great choice. Lovely beer.

Is there an ideal temp to cold condition. I ask because the new kitchen the swmbo spent my new taxi money on.....

happens to have one of those wine coolers built in that I can change the temp on.

The range is 3 to 18

I noticed that under 10c was fine and around 12-13c for drinking, any colder than this and it starts to "numb" the flavour. Which is why I suppose commercial lager brewers always go on about how cold their beer is, if you served it at temperatures you could actually taste it you would never drink it again :D

I'd go for around 11C - 12C like orlando says, or if you wanted to go a bit lower I would stop above the temperature that a chill haze occurs at, if you get them.
