Blow Off Tube

Post by Barticus » Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:18 pm

I have read on an American site that all glass demi johns should have a blow off tube attached to the air lock to prevent the DJ exploding and seriously injuring bystanders with shards of glass.

Is this correct?

I've just got the ones that hold 5 litres with a wiggly air bubbler in and have used it twice without injury, however this has me worried.

if you connect a tube to an airlock, you are not increasing the amount of c02 that can potentially leave the demijohn; just making the very same air from the airlock "go along a tube".

american site you say ?

Homebrewtalk or something like that.

Fairly unlikely to explode if used correctly then.

A blow off tube is doing the exact same task as your airlock, but with the advantage of allowing any excess brew to be contained if the fermentation is too lively.

This avoids a situation like this

You only rish exploding bottles/demijohns if you seal them and contain the co2 pressure to a point that its force is greater than the strength of the container.

Cheers.

Searching the net as a newbie can be a bit like trying to diagnose an ailment on the Internet.

You always find something that's deadly

Lots of american brewers have an obsession with the blow off tube, along with the concept that the krausen should be skimmed off to "prevent bitter resins re-entering the brew"... im sure there's some science there, but needle vs haystack.....

Did come with THE most important principle in home brewing tho....

"RELAX...and have a homebrew" :D
Primary 1: Nonthing
Primary 2 : Nothing
Primary 3 : None
Secondary 1 : Empty
Secondary 1 : None
DJ(1) : Nowt
DJ(2) : N'otin....
In the Keg : Nada
Conditioning : Nowt
In the bottle : Cinnamonator TC, Apple Boost Cider, Apple & Strawberry Cider
Planning : AG #5 - Galaxy Pale (re-brew) / #6 - Alco-Brau (Special Brew Clone) / #7 Something belgian...
Projects : Mini-brew (12l brew length kit) nearly ready :D
