Newbie question about buckets

Post by spikey » Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:09 pm

I'm currently making my very first attempt at brewing, and I'm using a 5-gallon Munton's kit. It's fermenting in a 25 plastic fermentation bin, to which for various reasons I haven't fitted an airlock. Within 36 hours of kickoff, the froth had completely filled all the headspace, and this raises the question of what to do differently next time.

It seems to me that if I had fitted an airlock, I would have been mopping up froth that had escaped through it. Am I right in thinking that for my next 5-gallon kit, I would do well to use a 33-litre bucket with an airlock in the lid, and hope that the extra headspace will take care of any tendency to froth-over?

BTW, sorry if I'm using any wrong terms. I'm just a winemaker turned would-be maker of fine beers (or at least cheap but drinkable ones)

I would suggest saving the airlock for your wine making, cover the airlock hole in the lid with a piece of tape and fit the lid to your FV. Now just slightly unclip a couple of inches of the lid to allow CO2 and possible spew to escape.

If I am expecting spew, I'll just stand my FV in a builders trug :)

As for this suggestion, I am assuming that sbond10 has had a few too many tonight :?
FV:

Conditioning:
AG#41 - Vienna Lager - 5.6%
AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

On Tap:
AG#44 - Harvest ESB - 5.4%
AG#45 - Amarillo Gold APA - 5.2%
