Carbonating a Cornie Keg
Carbonating a Cornie Keg
Well I have bitten the bullet and bought a shiny Cornie from our friend Normanumpa. Comes with proper beer tap etc. (also bought one of those little keg CO2 chargers using old soda bullet thingies as not ready for whole CO2 bottle and lines yet). Now my question is do I batch prime and then sling in Cornie to fizz up or am I best to let it all settle and then charge with keg charger?
Also looking inside I notice that the feed pipe is very near the bottom so how do you stop and sediment coming through into your pint? First brew to go in is a Mexican Cerveza tweaked with a bucket load of citrus (as per a couple of posts on here) so will need to be really clear. Is it best to transfer from primary fv to another and allow to settle even more before transfer?
Cheers

I have a second on the way too
You really need to purchase a CO2 cylinder and regulator http://bit.ly/NPNeQ4
You will use those bulbs up very quickly

Re: Carbonating a Cornie Keg
You will end up with a load of sediment if you batch prime first couple of pints will be cloudy, some people cut about 1 or 2cm from the bottom of the out tube to avoid it sittin in sediment but its your choice.
I also did the Coopers Cervenza with 6 limes + 2 oranges cut up in chucks and it was amazing but wasn't clear, yours wont neither no matter how long you leave it, I now have a 1 micron 10" water filter on its way to try fix my cloudy/hazy beer problems.

Cheers for the replies. Once I get a beer I am happy with (fussy lager drinker. Yeah usually mutually exclusive) then I will go for the full bottle setup.
Was thinking of just force carbing it for a change anyways but anything that can leave the sediment out will be good. I assume that mine will still be cloudy even though the slices of fruit are in a bag esp as I boiled them first and then chucked that lot in as first bit of hot water?
Looking forward to getting amongst it.

Re: Carbonating a Cornie Keg
hi mate just got myself rigged up with gas but before that i found 2 ways of carbonating with good results either add 150g of sugar into cornie when transfering from fv plus 1co2 gas bulb or put straight into cornie from fv and add 2 to 3 bulbs and shake the cornie so the beer can absorb the co2 its pretty exspensive but it works, hope this helps
by the way if you have small arms like me just pull the pipe in the cornie to 1 side i havent had any problems with my cornies although it is a little tricky .

soon be dead thank beer for that no pain where im going

Don't bend it too much though. Remember you had to be able to slide it out of the hole when you need to clean it and any kinks/extra bends may stop you from achieving thatlee1 wrote:by the way if you have small arms like me just pull the pipe in the cornie to 1 side i havent had any problems with my cornies although it is a little tricky .

Re: Carbonating a Cornie Keg
I use a 20oz paintball bottle when out and about with my Cornie beer.
And a pub bottle for force carbing and refilling my paintball bottle.
But theres no reason why you could'nt just force carb with a paintball bottle as well. Or even a s30 hambleton bottle
Force carbing with those little 16g bulbs is going to be expensive.

Shame we don't have CO2 at work as we seem to have loads of other gases. Looks like I will do a combo of a bit of batch priming and topping up with gas bulbs. I will see what size the pipe inside is and maybe put a little u shaped addition on it or just cut an inch off.
Thanks for the replies.

I am thinking of getting a corny and trying to work out the best co2 solution. I was looking into the paintball/disposable welding co2 canisters but cant find much info on how you would fit this to the corny. As it, what thread size is the bottle, do you need an adaptor etc..
Where did you get your 20oz paintball bottle from, and how do you connect it?
Thanks

Re: Carbonating a Cornie Keg
Well I did as planned and batch primed with 150g sugar and gave it a quick (very) squirt with the little bulb thingy to put a little layer of gas on top. Seems to have worked as didn't think and clipped on the beer disconnect and got a nice 6 foot blast of beer across the bar. (Note to self: Don't be so stupid next time).
Hopefully the combo of natural carbing and the backup bulb will get me a decent pressure to dispense with. It is now indoors to warm up and get going but will then go out in the garage for a month.
Cheers

Re: Carbonating a Cornie Keg
You can get paintball bottles at paintball shops or fleabay. Paintball sites and shops charge between £1 and £10 to refill a 20 oz bottle.
Whilst this pic shows a welding setup with a regulator. The principle is the same.
You want a ASA co2 fill on /off to fit your bottle http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-CO2-ASA-A ... 415fae4574
The thread out is 1/8 bsp/ npt. You can screw in a straight bard for tube for direct "co2 burbing". Or fit a regulator with some jiggery pokery with the threads.
