Is stout fermenting too slowly?

Post by jollytaxpayer » Wed Jul 18, 2012 5:11 pm

I'd really appreciate some guidance on my current brew, an Edme Irish Stout. It's been in the fv for 10 days now at about 18 - 19C. The Hydrometer reading is 1.016. I've ditched the instructions so don't know if this is usual but according to my other brews, it's rather high after 10 days. I forgot to take the OG and had to leave fv in a basin of cold water for a few day after starting it a tad too warm (not doing too well!). For past 5 days I've kept the fv tucked up in a duvet so it doesn't get too cold (yep, probably should have brought it in from the garage). So, if I haven't been clear enough, my question is whether my temperature is too cold and whether this is the reason I'm only on 1.016 unless this is norm?

Cheers, in anticipation [-o<

Don't panic Mr Mannering!

Excellent Ditch. I appreciate your effort :)
I know you'll know the answer to my 'panic', so am I doomed? I'm guessing not, just leave it longer and wait for a consistent reading over 3 days. However, some wise words about my temperature and reading would be nice.

:| I wouldn't bank on it, mate. I've never done that particular kit in my life. And I don't use a Hydrometer.

However, I do know the bog standard, Industry answer. And that's to leave a brew for fourteen days, before expecting anything of it.

So, ye have time yet in hand, look.

Then, if it's not down to ten, or what ever, they'll start encouraging ye to " Gently rouse it " and so on. I'd simply suggest ye get a Coopers, next time, and do it my way. My gear has simply never f**ked up
