Leaving a brew unattended whilst on holiday

Post by Barloch » Sat Aug 04, 2012 4:36 pm

Going on holiday for 2 weeks and was thinking of putting a brew on before i leave.

Was thinking of doing a nog.

My fv is in my loft, so steady 18-20 temp and not had any problems with previous brews. but never left them on their lonesome to fend for itself

any opinions safe or leave till i get home?

Barloch; I've actually taken to making my six FV's up, on the same day. Then, I leave them all in their FV's till, one by one, I get round to them and syphon them into the one, lightly rinsed out with tap water, BK.

Saves me endless faffing about and I've never had a bad pint as a result. Work it out; I'm drinking beers that have lain in the FV for a Month!

I just did exactly that with a Wherry kit whilst we were away for 2 weeks, with less than ideal temp fluctuations: the first week was cool but the second was that one hot week, and I left the FV in the lounge which gets all the sun. However, seems to have turned out fine, hadn't quite got down to the target FG when I got back so gave it a stir and it got there within a few days, total 16 days in the FV. Tastes great :D

Previously did the same with a Coopers Canadian Blonde kit over the Spring Half Term, whilst we were away for a week.

It's probably safer left like that rather than keep taking a sneaky peek
no palate, no patience.

Drinking - of course

Cheers guys. Will probably start it tomorrow so i can make sure the yeast starts to do it's job.

Don't want to risk it putting on the day before i leave and it fails, coming back to a wasted kit

I've left Wherry 3 weeks before and no problems.

Had one or ahem...two too many brews yesterday so was incapacitated to put on yesterday, so fighting the homebrew headache, just put my nog in just now

fingers cross the yeast takes, still at 26 degrees so too hot at the moment?

whats the highest temp you can pitch yeast at?
