What is in beer kits???

Post by strideredc » Sun Aug 12, 2012 9:32 am

Sounds a stupid question but please bare with it!

All the 3kg kits have different AVB's when you look (i dont mean when they say brew to 32 pints to get 5.5% ect) What i dont get is on beer engine if you put 3kg of LME in to 23l of water you get 3.9%, no more or no less. so when a kit says its 4.4% and its just 3kg of LME are they telling porkies or does that kit have more 'sugar' in it?

does anyone understand what i am talking about? :)

I posted this as i have never seen it asked before, maybe i haven't looked hard enough!

This might be me but a Wherry kit says 4.5avb? not whenever i have made it isnt!

If there is sugar in there dont they have to list it as an ingredient? i have never seen sugar listed on the side of the ones i have done?

Glucose dextrose there's about billion and one words the food industry use to describe sugar. Quite a lot of the time you'll see 2 or three different kinds of sugar in one product. As for the beer question I don't it's pure DME it's concentrated wort so maybe they have more lme but cause its be reconcentrTed as wort with hops it all fits in . Plus with 2 can kits you 1.5kg of lme and 1.5 of what I call Wort with hops added so I presume it's in higher levels than over if that makes any sense

Arr, i didn't know that i thought they were identical, so if you wanted you could make two 2.5gal brews?

Has there been any discussion about how these kits are made? from someone that works/worked at one of these places

As far as I'm aware Ones like you'd make if you where extract brewing but then concentrated with insomerised hops added then the second is just lme. It's possiably where people got the idea of adding DME to cheaper one can kits
