Coopers traditional draught with Apollo hops

Post by tim1400 » Tue Aug 14, 2012 11:29 pm

Hi all ,I am another returning homebrewer . Things have changed from the days of the boots kits !! . One of the best things is the internet and sites like this.I thought I would post after lurking in the background for a bit . I have done a few brews now learning from reading on here ,adding hops here and there.I have just bottled a John bull IPA made with half brewing sugar and half honey,Muntons gold yeast, a cascade tea and then dry hopped with cascade and fuggles. The sample left over was lovely I cant wait for this to be ready. For my next brew I have a Coopers trad draught kit ,1kg of BKE and I have just bought some Apollo Hops I was going to do a tea and dry hop with them has anyone any thoughts on this idea,I have heard that Apollo can be a bit strong .Thanks ....TIM

Hi and welcome to the addictive world of homebrewing :)

You have chosen a superb hop in Apollo, bigdave on here has created a lovely sounding brew with them - viewtopic.php?f=4&t=51712

I have used a small amount as a dry hop in a very short brewed Coopers TD (10.5L) along with 2 other hops and love them.

Just take note of thier very high alpha acid % (bittering power), especially if you are boiling any in your hop tea.

Thanks for your reply , I think that's tomorrow evening sorted then. I haven't tried boiling the hops yet ,I have been putting them in the tin with the boiling water to clean it out and leaving for about 30 mins before adding the water . It seems to be working so far . :D

That's a sound and simple method you've got there.

Apollo suits the TD kit well, as Coopers state that they use cascade aroma hops in it.

I've got a 10L AG brew containing 45g of Apollo hops on day 7 of primary, and the aroma under the lid is something else.

Well thats in the FV now .All I did was put 30g of the hops into the kit can with boiling water , the kitchen now has a lovely smell of hops and citrus. These are very pungent hops =D> . I will dry hop when I transfer to the secondary FV any ideas on how much to dry hop with :?:

Transferred to 2nd FV and added 25g Apollo hops in a muslin bag .The smell was again very nice but the mouthful I got during syphoning was a bit disappointing . Hopefully this will be ready for bottling when I get back from hols next Friday :D
