I used this in a Georde Mild kit, and it was very fizzy, to the point that when you took a sip your mouth fizzed up. It was the only addition, other than 1kg of BKE. Would the jar have upset the contents of tin or could it have been something else?

You bottled / kegged the beer too early or added too much priming sugar, nothing to do with adding malt extract.

Hi Geezah... do you boil your H&B malt extract to get a hot break then cool it to get a cold break in order get a clear wort or do you just pour it straight in the FV as is and if so does the final beer clear okay? I did a pale ale with it once and it just wouldn't clear, I wondered if boiling the malt would help.

I have used it in several brews - all coopers and cleared within two weeks of bottling or kegging.

I use it (sucessfully)- though I am not going to recommend it as it is not necessarily designed for brewing.

OP was to let those in the know ;-) of the deal

I personally pour in tin contents, pour in two jars H&B Rinse all three out with boiling water.
I use them in all my brews, never had one fail to clear.
I mostly do Coopers kits maybe it works better with them who knows!

probably just me then, maybe didn't leave it long enough to clear #-o probably I'll give it another try.

I dont use it as I find that DME is cheaper than the H&B malt even when on offer.

You only need the hot break / cold break if your boiling up wort from a grain mash so as to lose the protiens, unclear beer from a kit / LME is prolly due to other factors.

I just wondered if the H&B malt had some proteins or enzymes that might cause a haze as it is not actually produced as a brewing ingredient, I've probably just got a bee in my bonnet after having an unclear brew and wrongly putting the blame on the innocent H&B malt.
I too usually use DME plus the advantage of DME is a colour choice

I pay £6.29 a kilo for DME
Link

You have to consider the water content of LME, so you will need 1.7kg of LME to equal 1 kilo of DME

You also have the choice of dark - extra light dme which imparts the correct colour and flavour for the brew, and you know the barley was malted specificly for beer, so you get the best flavours and sugar content.

That said, some brewers use the H&B malt with success.

I thought that was possible at the time, but I am not certain. Would I have needed priming sugar with this, or should it have been a longer ferment due to the LME? I normally ferment for about 2 weeks, and add 80gms of sugar.

Your schedule sounds spot on - 2 weeks fermentation then batch prime with 80g of sugar.

Maybe using the LME the fermentation wasn't complete when you bottled as there are more complex sugars in malt extract than in sugar that may still have been fermenting whilst in the bottle.

This would work out cheaper http://www.worcesterhopshop.co.uk/index ... 3025e1e2a5 as long as you don't plan to keep it too long, or maybe split with a mate or something. If you email WHS they will tell you how long it will keep etc.
