And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
Well finally got round to ordering my starter kit (Coopers DIY w/Canadian Blonde) they tried to deliver it Monday, sadly I was at work so rearranged for delivery today as it's my day off. Been up since 8 like a little kid waiting for Christmas. Cannot wait to get stuck in and join the homebrew revoloution. Thanks to everyone who has given me adivce so far, no doubt you'll be helping me a lot more in the coming weeks.

All done and now in the cupboard, now the waiting game begins. OG was 1.035, however when I tested the hydrometer with water it gave 0.997 as a reading, so tKing that into a count, OG probably around 1.038
Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
Dont forget that the hyydromeret is probably calibrated at 20 c so if your wort or and the test water were a bit warmer then the reading will be a bit low.
Speaking of which, aim for fermenting a bit cooler, about 18-19c as opposed to the usual 21c for ales as some that have done a cooler fermentation report a much cleaner tasting beer as a result when using the Coopers Canadian Blond.
Paul.
Oh yes, and leave it a few days longer to make up for the cooler temp. Have a look at this thread. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=52968

hi mate never mind whats in the fv start thinking of whats going in next the lhbs is your oyster

soon be dead thank beer for that no pain where im going

Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
Mixed the wort and put the yeast in at around 24 degrees, now it's been in my cupboard where a consistent 18-19 degree temperature is, and last time I checked the temp of the FV had dropped to 22, so am assuming this will drop again to te same temp as the cupboard. Now its just a waiting game, will test a sample with the hydrometer after about 5 days, was planning on leaving to ferment for about 14 days anyway, before bottling, then bottle condition at room temperature for a week or so, before moving to the much cooler garage for a couple of weeks. Hopefuly all will be welloldtom wrote:Dont forget that the hyydromeret is probably calibrated at 20 c so if your wort or and the test water were a bit warmer then the reading will be a bit low.

Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
I already am, need to get myself another FV on the go. I'm quite fortunate in that there's an LHBS right near my work as well as another one about 20 mins away from me. Already planning on making a brewfridge, talk about running before you can walklee1 wrote:hi mate never mind whats in the fv start thinking of whats going in next the lhbs is your oyster

Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
Only planning eh Danny, you need to pull your finger out and get it done. Think of the crisp lagers you could brew.
Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
Just waiting for the right sized fridge my good man, then it's a one stop trip to lagertown. Once I've managed to fit a heating tube and what not.
Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
You've obviously done your homework!
Get the second one going before the first is finished. it removes the temptation to fiddle too much with the first

One thing at a time Dan. Whatever you get from your Blond kit. It`ll be drinkable. Just enjoy the results and get the next kit going.

Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
I found the fridge the hardest part to aquire, got a heater but have never needed it (kept indoors so the ambient temperature of the room is a minimun of 16c). I copied pdtnc's photos to set up my stc-1000, http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/h ... e-control/. I also have a fridge/freezer that I use for lagering, the freezer bit is for the odd occasion when I catch fish.
Re: And So My Brewing Adventure Begins
Checked brew this morning before I set off to work, thermometer on the FV now showing around 19 degrees which is the ambient temp of the cupboard I'm currently storing it in, so the temp shouldn't drop much further, if at all. Quite a bit of sediment has fallen to the bottom of the FV, doesn't seem to be a great deal of actvity happening at the moment, but hasn't even been fermenting 24 hours yet, so I guess that's understandable, on the plus side, ordered my starsan and bottling tree, happy days.
