Low Gravity Increasing
Low Gravity Increasing
So 2 nights ago I brewed my first ever batch. It was a Milestone kit. After I had pitched my yeast I took a sample and got an OG of 1020 which was a quite low. I chalked it up to something wrong I did along the way and checked a few bits on the internet as to what may have caused it.
Anyway when I checked it tonight I got a reading of 1021. As this is my first brew I'm not I wouldn't have much knowledge about this, but would anyone have any idea how my gravity has increased?

Re: Low Gravity Increasing
You are using a wine hydrometer And the scale is hard to read?
Or...
1.020 taken at 17degrees is 1.021 It might have warmed up in your house.

Re: Low Gravity Increasing
Even more likely if your hydrometer is not calibrated for 20c.

Re: Low Gravity Increasing
Check the hydrometer as well, quality is poor, I have had them read upto six points error.
Check in water at about 20°C it should read zero.

Checked the hydrometer in water and it read perfect in water.

Hi Mate
Just to help us a bit, what brew was it, and what did you had to it, and how much water?
My initial thoughts are that you havent dissolved all the fermentables and malt.
Also, you should take the reading before you pitch the yeast.
Cheers

It's Milestone Old Homewrecker 3kg kit, with Gervin ale yeast. The instructions didn't say to add anymore sugar. And guides on the internet said 3kg kits don't need any extra sugar.
I brought the water up 22.5L. After I emptied the 2 tins and cleared with boiled water.

Re: Low Gravity Increasing
In that case, you havent stirred it up and mixed in the contents on the tins properly. You have probably got a layer of goo at the bottom of your FV.AJ_Rowley wrote:It's Milestone Old Homewrecker 3kg kit, with Gervin ale yeast. The instructions didn't say to add anymore sugar. When I mix up a brew, I scrap the bottom of the FV with my paddle and keep mixing until nothing is scrapped off the bottom!
You may eb able to gentle stir your wort but you dont want to mess with it too much as you could add an infection!

Re: Low Gravity Increasing
Ignore if you did this, but once you have all of the kit, fermentables and water in the FV, you need to aeriate it by beating the shit out of it with a long spoon/paddle/drill with plaster mixer ( sanitised). This not only adds loads of air to get the yeast going but mixes everything together as well.
Nothing's forgotten, nothings EVER forgotten...
Re: Low Gravity Increasing
Just checked the gravity there. It's at 1022. Now I mixed the beer up yesterday around 11.30 so I'm assuming that by mixing it up has done something. It has been bubbling vigorously all day.
Re: Low Gravity Increasing
That will happen anyway even in a finished beer. Trapped co2 escaping.
