Wherry interesting

Post by millemg » Sun Oct 14, 2012 7:54 pm

Having brewed several Wherrys, none of the sticking problems, all came out perfectly...tonight I had the opportunity to do an age test :)

I happened to find a bottle at the back of my stash that was 7 months old !!!!

Excitedly I brought it in from my cellar ;) and cracked it open.... But then I paused, and shouted my wife....

.....kinky maybe, but I asked her to bring in a bottle from 4 weeks ago, pour a glass of each, and blindfold me !!!

Well....... In all seriousness, bondage aside, I could not tell which was which.

Some other brews seem to improve with age, but not the Wherry!!

So, forget the past, get it bucketed and bottled, and crack it open. :)

......and this is why I just bought 5 more kits from Wilkies for £15 a pop !!!

Mmmmm beer

I have found totally the opposite to be true.. So far done about 10 wherries and I find that the longer you keep it, the better it tastes - and it tastes fantastic after the initial 8 weeks! :)

There lies the problem with a standard Coopers brew IMO
FV:

Conditioning:
AG#41 - Vienna Lager - 5.6%
AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

On Tap:
AG#44 - Harvest ESB - 5.4%
AG#45 - Amarillo Gold APA - 5.2%

Makes you wonder if conditioning is really necessary in certain Kits!

Conditioning is still necessary, but maturing time obviously varies with different brews.

I am just getting in to the last 6 bottles of Coopers APA which I got in the big Tesco Sell off. When it was first " ready to drink" after 6 weeks or so cold conditioning, I was really dissapointed with it - much the same as the last Coopers kit I'd made, a Euro lager. Both seemed a bit bland, the APA being bitter but little hop flavour. I have been drinking a couple of bottles each weekend with my curry, and this weekend it seems to have suddenly developed lots of hoppy flavour and has become rather nice to drink. ( It was bottled end of July.). It's turned from an average beer in to a cracking one. I am tempted to keep 4 bottles and stash them for 6 month to see what they turn in to!

Getting another wherry under way today, one of the 11 quid ones, again from the Tesco sell off. Only 5 left now :(
