Hardly any yeast cake

Post by darkisland » Mon Oct 22, 2012 2:34 pm

Just brewed one of those simply ales pouches and for the first time (I've brewed MANY kits) there was no discernible yeast cake at the bottom of the fermenter. There was a slightly thick milky layer but that's it. The gravity went down to the expected level and the samples I tested tasted pretty good, nice and bitter not sweet at all.

My question is, has anyone else experienced this? Is it likely to be a problem?

Moving to all grain next time anyway...can't wait :)

Depends on the yeast strain and pitcing rate. If it's down at terminal gravity and tastes fine, then there should be no issue.

Well, dunno about strain and pitching rate...it was in a little foil sachet marked "yeast" :D

Hopefully all will be well and provide some nourishment up till AG brewday.

+1

You probably just have a strain which leaves more in suspension than you're used to, and what does flocculate packs more firmly at the bottom than you're used to. Since the stats came out right, and it looks, smells, tastes right...no problems to report. Cheers!
