Hello. I've never posted on a forum before and if I get the etiqette wrong, please excuse and correct me. The information available on here is amazing but I can't find the answer to my question (I have used the search). If my hydrometer is nine points out at the start (tested in water at 22 degrees), will it be nine points out at the end? Thabks

As in reads 1.009 in water @ 22 degrees ? Repeat the test and if it gives the same discrepancy, then yes, its a fixed anomily and you can allow for it. Given the price of a new hydrometer tho, you'd probably be better off replacing it - thats quite a serious error !

It's a 'Virtual Pub', Simon. Only we all brew our own! Come as ye are. Take us as ye find us. We're, mostly, more pissed by Midnight than Midday

Now, sling that f**king thing out. Give ye brain a rest. Learn and adopt the industry standard, 'Eleven Day Rule'.

Known, to Muntons, as the 'Oh god; Will this Ever ferment?!' rule.

To people who follow Ditch Do Ryu as; 'F**k! This is Good! ..... Just one more then .....' Image

But it does work doesn't it? Just 9 out at the start and 9 out at the finish

"Old hydrometers are calibrated to (59° F / 15° C) and newer ones are typically (68° F / 20° C). "

http://www.brewersfriend.com/hydrometer-temp/

have you tried it @15c ?, i wouldn't throw it away unless it had a crack in it.

What i'm getting at (no disrepect) if it's 9 out at OG, will it be out 9 at SG? Same hydrometer so it will give me the same alcohol content reading

yes, there will be nothing wrong with it!

i would recommend you do find out at what temperature it reads 0 then you can just put that into "calibration" in the link i posted to make things simpler (baring in mind you also have to adjust for the temperature of the wort - which will more then likely fluctuate unless you have temperature control).

why people recommend throwing equipment away is beyond me!
