Has fermentation stopped

Post by Newbrew1 » Fri Mar 08, 2013 6:30 pm

Came home from work noticed no movement in fv took krausen collier of replaced lid noticed temp had dropped to 20 degrees. Does this mean the yeast has stopped fermenting due to the drop from22 to 20 degrees . Brewing coopers lager in coopers diy kit nice smell institution say ferment between 21 and 27 but some of the post replied to me said 22 would be ok due to the yeast I was using say again has yeast stopped or are they just cleaning up started the brew on Tuesday only been 3 days any info will be appreciated

The only way to tell for sure is to take the gravity readings with a hydrometer. Identical readings over 3 days will indicate it is done.
Leave it alone, don't even bother looking at it, completely ignore it for at least another week. Do your hydrometer testing then bottle or keg it.
I know the temptation to look at it is very addictive but best leave it well alone. 3 days is to soon (in most cases) the yeast will still be working away.20oC is fine but try to avoid temperature fluctuations.

Don't worry about the temps, 18 is grand, no need I think to put a heat belt on. Forget it's there for another week to 10 days!

Dunno. If you're really worried take a sample out and taste it. If it's infected you'll know straight away.

What's the kit, and what yeast are you using?

OP says Coopers Lager; IIRC that uses a proper lager yeast so I'd say definitely don't raise the temperature. 3 days in the initial krausen may well have died down, but it almost certainly will still be fermenting.
As mentioned above, (a) leave the lid on for at least another week - every time you open it up gives another chance for infection; then (b) take gravity readings over successive days - when it's the same reading under 1010 for 3 successive days, it's done, and not until!

Don't worry John drummer not took lid off you can see through the fv will leave it another week before testing .
Ailbhes the kit I am using is the coopers lager with the green cap and the yeast was in a gold packet under the lid 7 grams

Sounds like the lager kit with the ale yeast in. Leave it for around 14 days overall and make sure you have 3 consecutive identical hydrometer readings then bottle it.
