Wilko Stout Kit - Yeast?

Post by CJR » Thu Feb 27, 2014 8:19 pm

Hey everybody,

Popped to Wilkinsons today and picked up a stout kit (LHBS was closed and I really need beer so no AG tonight). I'm going to chuck in 1-2kg Spraymalt (Extra-dark I believe) that I have hanging around and possibly add some malt (Chocolate & Crystal) I have still. I was just wondering if anybody knew who made the kits and what yeast they're supplied with? I have a nice jar of yeast from work and I'm wondering what to use.

Also, considering my ideas, do these kits lend themselves well to modification?

Cheers for any replies,

Never had any issues modifying the recipes, always play about with the sugars. I've used this kit once with 500ml malt extract and 500ml black treacle...came out lovely. Must admit I usually use Coopers stout kit as its only a couple of quid more, and I'm a sucker for the branded shiny labels.

Not sure about the yeast supplied.

Good luck with it!

The yeast on the cheap light pilsner wilko kit I had was terrible. Might be worth using a better one. For future ref I think the coopers stout kit is very pleasant for the money and I've enjoyed a couple over the last few months.

Went with a jar of yeast skimmed off the top of a brew at work. Have the packet that was supplied somewhere around here. Fermented out within the week and a lovely clean brew. Used 2kg DME and steeped the malt I had left over.
