campden quickie
Hi all. Am going to knock a few kits up this week, no time to fire up the burco. Will be treating water with 1/2 crushie,to 25 litres.
When I've done this before I've left overnight.to work..do I need to?
Oh...Ditch's. Stout. And probably a pale if some sort

Re: campden quickie
Depending if your water company add Chloramine or not, leaving overnight could have the same effect as adding Campden, as the chlorine will evaporate overnight.
To get back to your question, as long as it is well crushed and mixed, 15 minutes should do the trick.

FFS, Timbo! Haven't ye read what I say on my thread? I sling the crushie in the jerry can. Stick the hose pipe in and fire away. Four gallon mark and it's straight out of the shower and into the FV.
So, mine works in the time it takes me to take a few steps across the kitchen. 'Over night'

Re: campden quickie
I think masterosouffle was saying it takes overnight if you just leave it to stand without using a campden tablet, Ditch.
The reaction with campden is, as you say, virtually instantaneous once mixed in.

Didn't know that, I've been leaving mine overnight with half a crushie

At least I can be a bit more spontaneous with my kit brews now.
Cheers

Yeah, sorry, Jim; I wasn't really thinking about what MOS was saying. More harking back to the generality of what Monk's has since put down. I.e. That it's well enough known that people do say a crushie can take anywhere from " Ten minutes " to " Over night " to work.
Complete bollocks, of course. God knows where it started. I doubt even Berry said it. And I've made a few kits of my own as stated above. Never had a problem.

What? " Pardon "? Like, ye misheard what I wrote ....? Just read it more slowly. Move ye finger along the letters and mouth them, if it helps. Only, don't expect me to try to repeat it in words of fewer syllables.masterosouffle wrote:Pardon?Ditch wrote:FFS, Timbo! Haven't ye read what I say on my thread? Re: campden quickie
Agree that it depends on water-company. Some add ammonia which reacts with chlorine to form chloramines which do not evaporate or boil off.masterosouffle wrote:Depending if your water company add Chloramine or not, leaving overnight could have the same effect as adding Campden, as the chlorine will evaporate overnight.

Campden does get rid of them and normal chlorine immediately though.
Maybe something odd about my campden tablets but they seem to take ages to dissolve unless crushed very well. To get around this I make up a solution of 10% & 1% sod met and use a set volume of this per 50L water.
