So wilko have another homebrew sale on (25% off all homebrew stuff) and I was thinking of giving one of the Tom Caxton beers a go. I've already taken advantage of this sale by having Cooper's English bitter in the fv, Cooper's lager in the bottle, and the stout on stand by for the winter perhaps. . But what about these Tom Caxton kits? I notice there's a hop sachet in these which will be new to me, but my local wilko stocks the lager, best bitter and real ale. These have the most content out of the one can kits (1.8kg ) so it must make a nicer beer right? Was thinking of doing the lager or the real ale. What are these kits like brewed up with just sugar/brown perhaps?? I've looked but can't find much.
Cheers!

Re: Tom Caxton range
I've brewed the Tom Caxon Real ale kit, and it was god aweful.
I've heard good reviews for the Woodford range, in perticular the Wherry.
Hope this helps

Re: Tom Caxton range
I've done the wherry and that didn't turn out too good, my fault though brewed it at too high a temp I think. Lesson learned there. Thought for the price Tom Caxton would be a good bet, maybe not then. I brewed a wilko stout, just cracked a bottle and it's brilliant. Brewed it very short, to ten litres, without any sugar. Impressed so far and it can only get better I suppose!
Cheers.

Re: Tom Caxton range
Horses for courses I guess. I wasn't impressed by the Tom Caxton real ale kit. I had much better results using LME (liquid malt extract) in a 15 litre pan and boiling it up with some Styrian hops for a Timothy Taylor landlord clone.

Re: Tom Caxton range
I bottled 40 pints of Tom Caxton Best Bitter on April 20th and it's turned out fine. I used half the hop sachet and it does have a good hop character though I imagine real hops would give a better result. I would certainly recommend the use of at least 50% spraymalt in your brew. It may cost more than Tate & Lyle but it is well worth the extra investment.
Re: Tom Caxton range
Just picked up on this post after searching for Tome Caxton est bitter. I bought on today in Wilkos along with 500g of medium DME. How did you make yours was it with 1kg of tate and lyle brewed to 23 litres. I was thinking of Using the 500g DME with some detrose and brown sugar and maybe some extra hops.
