seeking a good IPA kit suggestions and some general wisdom
seeking a good IPA kit suggestions and some general wisdom
Im really new to home brewing and have currently got my second batch a coopers Mexican cerveza conditioning in a keg. (Fingers crossed it comes out ok) my first attempt was a youngs larger kit and it came out ok but I ended up pouring most away as it just wasn't that enjoyable.
Im planning to do an IPA next and was hoping someone could recommend a good kit to use and advise me on how to get the most out of it.
My usual method is to boil 4 pints of water and mix in the brewers sugar and can contents transfer that into a FV then top up with water to 23ltrs aiming for it to be about 20ºc add yeast the seal on lid with air lock attached and place in a water bath temp controlled by a fish tank heater until fermenting is complete. I would then siphon off into a keg with priming sugar and leave warm for 3 days then cool for a couple of weeks to a month befpre drinking. (I sterilize everything) .
Is this the best way to go about brewing from kit or can you advise me how to get better results?
Thanks

I wouldn't know about IPA kits. But, general wisdom?
You'll often notice the wind get up, just before a heavy rain.
How's that?

Your general brewing process looks ok to me, I would maybe suggest leaving a brew in the warm for 1-2 weeks to ensure a thorough secondary fermentation.
What type of commercial IPA's do you like, are we talking Greene King IPA, Shepherd Neame IPA or Brewdog Punk IPA?

Exactly, IPA means many different things
Re: seeking a good IPA kit suggestions and some general wisd
I like brewdogs punk IPA so was hoping to be able to get something like that.

Festival Razorback is a decent drop, probably one of the better IPA kits. 5.7% also

If only....that's why I'm building a AG rig.martindisorder wrote:I like brewdogs punk IPA so was hoping to be able to get something like that.
Razorback, Evil Dog and Youngs APA are fruity/citrusy hoppy kits.

Woodfordes Nelson's Revenge is not a bad 2 can kit especially if you tweak it with some hop additions and a mini-mash.

Don't do any more cheap 1 can kits is my advice. You get what you pay for - hence your experience with your first kit!
I only do kits with 3kg plus of malt extract now.
As for IPAs, I had a sneak preview (just a week in the warm, and a day in my fridge) of a Bulldog Raja's Reward and that going to be very nice in a couple of weeks.
Last bit of wisdom, your beer get better the longer you leave it so get brewing loads of early batches and try to build up a 'stock'!!! The best bottle of any early batches will be the last one you drink!
