Newbie saying how do
Newbie saying how do
Hi, newly registered and thought I would post as I have been doing quite a bit of reading of the forum. no previous brewing experience but fond memories of a giant bucket of my dads Yorkshire bitter bubbling away in my childhood dining room!
I got a brew packs "brubox" for fathers day and immediately started a batch of stout. It went mental for 24 hours but then died off and after 5 days all activity had stopped. I waited a further 3 days before bottling. I tasted a bottle a week after bottling and it was nasty! After doing some reading it was probably too warm in the room I used. Hopefully it will age well.
So I now have a Yorkshire bitter on the go in the hallway where it is much cooler and with no windows so no natural light. It took a while to get going but has been very active for over 3 days so much improved. Fingers crossed.
Before anyone says it, I'm already chipping away at the Mrs to get the proper equipment!
Question, If I want to use finings to clear my beer, the sachets say its enough for 20 litres but the brubox makes 10 litres. Ok to put the whole sachet in? Or try and estimate half a sachet?

Welcome aboard!
Kit brewing's an excellent way into this hobby, but as you already seem to know you always want the next shiny bit of kit! I started out for a couple of years with kits and learnt a lot about controlling fermentation temperatures and yeast and general process that was invaluable when I made the step up to All Grain.
Sounds like your first brew box could have been too warm, depending on what the "nasty" taste was. A week after bottling is pretty soon and I'd expect some of your priming sugar to be around which will alter the flavour. Yeast that has fermented far too warm does give off flavours though.
As for the finings question I've used a full sachet in 10 litres a couple of times and never noticed any ill. Likewise it won't matter if you guess half a packet, a little bit under or over isn't going to ruin your beer.
Happy Brewing!

So, AO; Ye like stout and are dealing with warmth ....?
Re: Newbie saying how do
Yes! Am I missing something really obvious?
I think the brubox thingy is now more appropriately placed, seems quite a bit cooler in the hallway than in the back room

Ditch is famous for his stout. Look out for the thread in this forum: viewforum.php?f=56
Re: Newbie saying how do
Ok thanks will check it out! I've just had a cheeky second bottle do stout and the "off" taste definitely mellowed a bit!
Re: Newbie saying how do
Follow ditches stout instructions, you won't go wrong. It's the only kit beer I still make. That threads a laugh too!
Re: Newbie saying how do
Just had a thought. The brubox kits are quite expensive online mainly because of postage, but could I split a two can kit and buy an extra pack of yeast from say, Wilkos and make two 10litre batches of something like this sherry everyone raves about?
Re: Newbie saying how do
Ok, Yorkshire bitter bottled up last night, it tasted good but was rather cloudy. Will hopefully clear in bottles.
I also put wherry on, one can plus kit yeast brewed to 10l. It sounds like its gone mental overnight!
