Wilko Real Ale kit suggestions please

Post by Rango » Tue Aug 12, 2014 5:30 pm

Hi all,

I'm quite new to this game, i have brewed a sunny dew, followed the instructions and was very disappointed with the results.

Then i brewed a wherry, with help and advice from people on this forum, and had many pats on the back with the results..

so, popped into wilko today, ignored the wherry and bought the Real ale kit, does anyone have any prior experience or advice on preparing this ??

I could follow the instructions, but as I've outlined above, i think i'd rather take some advice from you guys... i intend to put less water in for a stronger brew.
thanks in advance

I've got one of these kits and what I plan to do is brew it light to 20 litres and dry hop it with 50g of EKG.I'm sure someone will be along with more ideas. :)

I believe the Real Ale is very similar to Wherry.

I put this on to brew today with a 30g chinook tea from 15 min french press and made to 21l. Going to dry hop with about be same chinook again (pellets). Smelt great and I probably have one of the best smelling food waste bins In the area at the moment.

I'm looking at doing this with Chinook also - what is the French Press you mention?

I've got a 100g of Chinook pellets - can I simply steep these in a muslin in an empty tin with hot water as I would whole hops then put it all in the FV, or just the tea?

Dry hop by just chucking the pellets in towards the end or put them in another muslin?

My guess would be a cafetiere; they are certainly a ood way to make a hop tea.

I always hop in a hop bag, otherwise they can choke the syphon (or tap / little bottler). Though i guess you could strain your beer on its' way into the syphon using a muslin bag.

Happy brewing,

Ian.

French press/cafatiere method
Is throwing your hops in a clean cafatierre (use oxy to remove old coffee from it) and then put some water from the kettle that had been allowed to cool a little) stir, leave for desired time (I do 15 mins) and then pour into fv at the same time as making the kit up. Seems to work well. I am also dry hopping it too. Had a taste (not quite finished fermenting) and it definitely was my best beer to taste. Can't wait to keg it and tap it. To stop hops from going through my syphon I place the end of the syphon in a hop bag and use as normal.
