Wilko Newkie Brown Dry Hop

Post by alexlark » Wed Aug 13, 2014 8:43 pm

I've got this kit to go on next. I've also got Challenger and Cascade hops in the freezer. As I haven't done a lot of dry hopping, will Challenger and Cascade hops suite this beer style?

I'm not too sure if Challenger dry hop that well, but I only say this as I haven't seen much on here regarding them.

Cascade is a very good dry hopper, but will only be fine if you are looking to brew an American style brown beer.

Cheers

So if I were to use Challenger and Cascade I suppose I should hop tea the Challenger and dry hop the Cascade. I've not used these hops before and I'm really only now starting to venture into hops so it's a case of understanding what hops I like. I've also got East Kent Goldings, Fuggles, Northern Brewer and Saaz.

I done a hop tea with the Saaz in a Youngs Lager (with Saflager yeast and 1kg light DME), brewed in Feb 14 and only tried it lastnight. The hops make a lot of difference to this cheap kit and I love the taste. Got it force carbing until the weekend :)

I done another hop tea with the Northern Brewer in a Youngs Yorkshire Bitter (kit yeast and 1kg BKE) dry hopped with EKG, brewed last month and tasted when racking off. I've done this kit before but I may have overdone it with the Northern Brewer as it was quite bitter. I'm hoping it will mellow out over the next few months.

The only other brew I have done with hops is a St Peters Ruby Red Ale. I used the hop sachet powder but also dry hopped with EKG. Brewed 2 months ago and is currently conditioning . I haven't tasted this yet but it smells lovely.

I also love Brew Dogs Punk IPA so as you can see I like hoppy beers!

So on that note, are American Style Brown beers considered hoppy? and whould another combination of my hop stock be better in the Newkie Brown?

Cheers!

Hi WA

Maybe I should add Amarillo and Pride of Ringwood to my shopping list! :D

I've been looking what hops I should use to get a Punk IPA style brew and on my list I've got:

Chinook
Ahtanum
Nelson Sauvin
Simcoe

I think I'm going to be building up a nice collection!!

Hehe, hop buying is very addictive!

I had started to use up a few varieties in my freezer, but after a random order from the Maltmiller, I'm back up to about 20 different hops again!

An American Brown Ale isn't one of their hoppiest styles, but it would be much hopper than an English version :-D

Hop away with Cascade!!

Cheers
